Totally agree..... but what happens when you add a little excitement, not to mention speed, into the equation...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1bDtEBzdLQ&feature=related

And while I'm on, this is the best live version I've come across. Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoEQREKFQG4

A marvellous thread well done ! I've just spent an hour revelling in nostalgia. Both the Air Drums and guitar were heavily used.

Hmm, you're right, has the intro's golden age been and gone? I'm going to look for some recent intros. Difficult... this comes to mind: Temper Trap - Sweet DispositionBut then again the intro is basically the song. Lana Del Rey does good intro, but they're all the same.

At risk of exposing myself as a closet cheese-rocker, I am tempted to mention Fleetwod Mac "Oh Well" or "Tusk" To partially repair that harm, this is The Cure "A Forest" (which also has the best ending of any song ever) http://youtu.be/RGT4V6JmINA

I was entirely expecting this first one to have been nominated in the first post given the title: The Who - Baba O'Riley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KRpRMSu4gJS Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (The bit from 1:10 in is also stunning, but probably cannot be classed as the intro) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho9rZjlsyYYDeep Purple - Smoke on the Water (intro great, rest of the track is decidedly average) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mCK05dgwgUDire Straits - Brothers in Arms (If it doesn't click for you, watch The West Wing - Two Cathedrals and it will) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhdFe3evXpkJohn Martyn - Clutches http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=656SIQoXGpMLed Zeppelin - Immigrant Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBmueYJ0VhAPink Floyd - Sorrow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdKNlGfkyhcU2 - The Fly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0edY2zMNB0

A lot of U2 stuff has great intros, especially their 90's output IMO. That Who track was used in Premium Rush to great effect, even if the film was just average. And there's always Annie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjbNLVQ_Iwk
