Now there's a song that can never possibly be played too loud. I was at a goth party once when I was a student (yes, really but the answer to your question is no, I wasn't. I was going out with a girl who was though) and they were playing that song so loud we got complaints from someone living on the 20th floor of a nearby tower block

Totally agree..... but what happens when you add a little excitement, not to mention speed, into the equation......

And while I'm on, this is the best live version I've come across.

A marvellous thread well done ! I've just spent an hour revelling in nostalgia. :D

Both the Air Drums and guitar were heavily used.

Hmm, you're right, has the intro's golden age been and gone? I'm going to look for some recent intros.

Difficult... this comes to mind:

Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

But then again the intro is basically the song.

Lana Del Rey does good intro, but they're all the same.

At risk of exposing myself as a closet cheese-rocker, I am tempted to mention Fleetwod Mac "Oh Well" or "Tusk"

To partially repair that harm, this is The Cure "A Forest" (which also has the best ending of any song ever)

I was entirely expecting this first one to have been nominated in the first post given the title:

The Who - Baba O'Riley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KRpRMSu4g

JS Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (The bit from 1:10 in is also stunning, but probably cannot be classed as the intro)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho9rZjlsyYY

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water (intro great, rest of the track is decidedly average)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mCK05dgwgU

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (If it doesn't click for you, watch The West Wing - Two Cathedrals and it will)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhdFe3evXpk

John Martyn - Clutches
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=656SIQoXGpM

Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBmueYJ0VhA

Pink Floyd - Sorrow

U2 - The Fly

A lot of U2 stuff has great intros, especially their 90's output IMO.

That Who track was used in Premium Rush to great effect, even if the film was just average.

And there's always Annie
