Ok so I guess the 450D isn't a 500D without HD video. 8-)

Thanks.

Is the 450D good best at price point though ?

Currently using a borrowed Fuji S3 Pro which is a DSLR based on the Nikon D80.

Even I can take nice pics with it, but need my own.

So why not get one or a D80 secondhand ?

The fuji is a favourite for portrait and weddings i believe due to the fancy sensor (although 'technically' only 6mp)

Looked at the S5 pro today, its based on the Nikon D200 but its a grand, very nice though. Was in the market for a D450 but didn't want to spend that much right now so I looked at the Nikon 3000 and the Canon 1000 and an ex display D60. Did not like the feel of them, and the Nikon felt rather nasty (to me anyway), in the end came away with a the titchy Olympus E-420 (still the worlds smallest D-SLR, I think) with two lenses, a 14-42mm Zuiko and a Zuiko 25mm 'pancake', with the 'cake on this thing is seriously titchy, and I am willing to substitute some of the versatility of the Nikon and Canon for its diminutive size. Its a four thirds fitting.

The lot came to £490 with a Lexar 4GB 300X Pro Compact Flash Card.

Here is a pic of one (but not mine) with the pancake lens fitted, didn't take one myself as the Fuji Finepix S7000 (not mine) camera I took the pics with eats 4 R6 batteries in about 5 photos (no exaggeration) and I didn't have any more to feed it.

Nice.
Four Thirds - I keep hearing so many good things about it, I hope it catches on. Makes far more sense to me than the system Ricoh are pushing with the interchangeable lens/sensor unit.

http://www.four-thirds.org/ !

I set off wanting a D450 or 500 or a similar price Nikon but the bodies alone were above my price point as I needed a CF card too. I had read the E-420 on a tripod (it doesn't have IS) with the pancake 25mm is fantastic, punches above its weight, the Pancake on its own is about £200 I think, so will put some shots up when I get used to it.

I like the Ricoh system. Not only can you have a different lens for a particular situation but a different sensor type! There's also rumour kicking around that they could make units other than lens/sensor e.g. projector (which are going to be popular on compacts and phones in the near future).

Maybe if it catches on I could actually afford another lens for my Olympus SLR

Four Thirds is aleady in use by Olympus in their SLRs and has been for some time. Not to be confused with Micro Four Thirds as used in the new Pen, etc. The lenses of the Micro 4/3 arent compatable with 'normal' 4/3.

Ricoh have invented a very good way of separating people from their money.
Thinking back to when 35mm was the standard, if I wanted to change the way I captured an image, I'd change a roll. Go from a nice rich Velvia 50 to a T-Max 400. Maybe put on a new lens.
These days, we process things in software to cook up a different look and feel.
But what you can't change is the sensor and the camera's processor. Some people swear the Oly's do blues better than the Nikons. I'm sure Canon have their own quirks in the way they record from the sensor. But that's a choice you make when you buy into a system.
What Ricoh are offering appears, to me, to be a neat solution to having dust enter your optics and going from APSC to a full frame sensor (or what have you) without changing your body.
But do we really need it? Is it going to move things forward significantly? If your in the market for a small point and shoot with changeable lenses, I suspect you'll go Micro 4/3rds. If you're interested enough to appreciate the advantages of keeping the sensor and lens in the one unit, you've probably got a decent camera body that you know how to use.
You're also probably wise enough to appreciate that current pocket sized cameras are, on the whole, good enough when you need them these days.
I'm struggling to see the market.
As for projectors, again I'll wait and see, but I'm not sold. They're a pain in the ass to set up to get a good image from at the best of times, to then put it on a small handheld device... I can't see the point.

But maybe I'm wrong, we'll see.

Did you mean not enter your optics?

I think I'm more into the whole innovation aspect of it. In a market where everyone follows the leader I like to see something new and different. I dont know how well it will work or catch on but its nice to see someone trying :D

This might be of interest.

(It's apparently offline at the mo, but I managed to read it earlier today.)

I think either works, tbh. Dust in optics is the 'problem'. Ricoh believe they have the solution.

I do really like the idea of having a GF-1 + pancake lens to act as my carry-around-at-all-times-so-I've-always-a-camera-with-me camera. Such a shame these things cost money...
