That is even heavier than the Giotto, but goes another 14cm higher over the MT9260 AND it is cheaper. Would you recommend it, Nick? or are there niggles that would make you reluctant?

I would recommend it. It's extremely versatile.

I'd recomend it to, although can't really make any comparisons to other tripods.

That's why you carried it up Helvellyn is it?

Mark

You may have failed to notice that I left most of my equipment at the bottom of the mountain and only took the camera and one lens.

*sigh*

Even though you have also been moaning about the weight of your tripod in previous threads?

Have I? It's a heavy beast, and I'd love to be able to get a carbon fibre equivalent, but I couldn't see an affordable tripod that had the flexibility my one offers. I just plan where I take it more. It is heavy, though, but that's not much of an issue with some forward planning.

What did/didnt the other one do?

As Edd said, the Manfrotto can get very low to the ground, centimetres in fact. That was what Mr Ark wanted to do. It is heavier than the Giotto, that's true, but I prefer it that way as it makes it more stable in windy conditions.

Are we going to start a Giotto v Manfrotto battle now, like the Canon/Nikon flamewar in the other thread? :-D

No no. There was no hidden meaning in my post. I just genuinely wanted to know what the other one couldnt do out of curiosity.

Well, before I nip off to bed and a night shift, I wanted to say thanks for the input and the laughs. I am not too bothered about the extra weight as I am used to lugging 20lb plus rucksacks around the mountains and the rest of my kit isn't too heavy at the moment so I'll give the Manfrotto some serious consideration.

I would see the extra height and low-height capabilities as a bonus, especially as it's cheaper and the weight shouldn't be a great problem.

It may be cheaper but you need to buy a separate head for it. Don't forget to factor that in!

Already covered in OP and helpfully answered by Heather.

Well, I thought I'd just let you know that I went with the Manfrotto 055XPROB and the Giottos head.

I'm very pleased with both and the versatility of the tripod is amazing. Although it states that the minimum height is 10cm, it is possible to get a lens so close to the ground in that you could almost touch the ground with the end of the lens.

Thanks again.
