I've just discovered that according to fueleconomy.gov, a 'merkin site, my 2.5l Mazda returns about the same fuel economy as the 5.7l Camaro unit. So I might as well...

Upon conviction the maximum penalty for using an unlicensed taxi is a fine not exceeding £2500. Similarly driving a taxi without being the holder of a Taxi Drivers Licence carries a maximum fine of £1000 plus 3 - 6 penalty points. Operating without proper insurance carries a maximum fine of £5000 plus 6 - 8 penalty points That was for NI but I imagine it's very similar in Scotland, not to mention that the number of women attacked and molested by unlicenced taxi drivers.

interesting, I doubt its illegal in my case as they just randomly hopped into my car and so as a random favour take them to where they wanted and off they went, I insisted on not accepting cash but they woudnt take no for an answer

From the taxi drivers I know over here (legal or otherwise), it's usually some no-mark fine and penalty points that get dished out - not that that makes it a good idea, and as Fin somewhat points out, it looks even worse if accusations come your way...

email of complaint sent to o2 about my handset, look forward to the reply as I have just read the slip in the box and will seriously rip into it (as it refers to manufacturers warranty.... I wasn't making a claim to get it repaired under the manufacturers warranty (I would send it to the manufacturer for that!), I made a claim under the sales of goods act to get it repaired! Going to send the letter tomorrow Bratty, you took paying customers in your car (as you obviously didn't refuse enough, and you said you pretended to be a taxi), if you crashed your insurance would be void as it was used in an uninsured way (as a means of business), the vehicle would not be in posession of a taxi MOT so could be crushed, and you werent licenced so would be in trouble. It's not a laughing matter that you pretended to be something you weren't http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjpSABdpBJQ

It depends on the Authority in my experience. I know that the Licensing Department of Cardiff County Council come down on unlicensed Taxi drivers like a ton of bricks, as do Torfaen.

I've accepted "petrol money" in the past when I've given people a lift. Am I a criminal, or just a tight-wad?

I wouldn't say it's a taxi when you agree to give them a lift somewhere for free for a friend. If I was giving someone a lift somewhere I wasn't going (or on my way) I wouldn't turn down petrol money if it was a long journey though But this weren't friends, they were drunk people, aka strangers, paying strangers at that.
