Does anyone know the *approximate* cost for moped insurance for someone on a provisional licence? I only need a rough figure to work with, so if you know or have done it recently please post an approx. amount it cost you to the nearest £50.

Are you buying new or second hand? Some of the manufacturers, like Suzuki, used to do special deals when buying new. ISTR they were very competitive.

I am not going to fling all my details into insurance websites so I can get hounded about insurance that I don't need. This is for a calculation that will take all of about 5 minutes so an approximate figure from someone's reollection will do fine.

A quick google brings up average TPFT for approx £300 a year, obviously this depends on where you live etc. If you buy a new moped you usually get the 1st years insurance free of for £100 or so.

Don't get a moped Jonathon, they don't last 2 minutes. Seriously, most of the bikes we're fixing around this time of year are mopeds. The front suspension drops to bits, they heat-seize up, they go through pistons at a rate of 2 a year. Try and get something like a Yamaha DT50 or if you're 17/18, a Honda CG125. The CG will last for ever and ever. And then some. And the DT is like a motocross/enduro style bike, and they're pretty quick for what they are. Me, I'm having a road legal pitbike. But I'm ripping the slow 50cc engine out and putting a twin cam 150cc Takegawa engine. 27hp to the back wheel compared to 8 is deffinately for the epic win.

That wouldn't have anything to do with their owners riding them everywhere at full throttle and maximum speed, would it?

Yeah it would be, because they are sh*t slow, and do 30mph tops. And if you let off the revs a little bit, it's like slamming the brakes on.

Or revving the engine for no apparent reason at traffic lights which as far as I'm aware with an auto clutch/box does nothing but help break things!

I don't want one, I just need it for some stats I'm collating. I don't like motorbikes, mostly because riding one is so sodding dangerous. I'll stick with cars.

Don't those offers usually only apply if the rider has had a full license for so many years? I doubt you'd get free insurance on a provisional.

Its called sneaky adaptation Rub the 1 off the 150 on the engine for maximum profit
