Let people wear what they want - so long as it is voluntary and not forced upon them.
If this woman really wants to look ridiculous, then let her.

Of all the religious zeolots, converts have to be the worst - they're like vegetarians and people who have just quit smoking - you just know they converted/gave up meat or cigarettes to cause a fuss and be lousy party guests!

I'm not a police officer, but through work, I've been rounded upon by a member of the CofE for wearing a hat inside his church. I apologised and removed it. No harm, no foul. What's the issue with being asked to (un)cover your hair when entering a sacred space for someone?

That's not the point though. The point is wearing a full blown, dressing gown sized garment whilst swimming is not safe for her or for other people. If she want's to to look ridiculous then fair enough but don't put other people at risk because of it.

No sorry that's going too far. Uniform requirements specifically state that a constable must wear his/her hat when outside of a building or his/her car. If you start entertaining the requests of one minority in a public place then that opens the floodgates. Besides, there's no such thing as a Muslim area. It's all England and English law applies. End of.

Is a mosque a public place? Actually, it might be a uniform requirement, but it in no way impedes the officer in the pursuit of their duty, so as I say, no harm no foul. The presence of a hat does not make or break the officer.

In a mosque is fine, but if it was out in public then quite frankly the community can foxtrot oscar. The presence of a hat is most certainly important. Professional looking police officers command respect and authority.

I'm slightly heartened someone still believes that. You're wrong, of course, but it's nice nevertheless. Jon

You see, here it is a criminal offence not to be polite to a police officer. Even addressing them in the familiar form (Du) instead of the formal form (Sie) can lead to a fine!
