Interesting. My parents just got a new card through from HSBC and it was Visa debit. I'm still on Maestro and not due a new card 'til September. I recall reading that when Maestro took over Switch, they didn't actually change it to Maestro, which is why we have to select 'Maestro UK' in some chip and pin machines.

Any reason? I'd prefer to use credit cards as they offer far more security, insurance, etc. I just tend not to as I know I wouldn't pay the balance off, and I'd end up racking up a huge debt.

Exactly. The Maestro system in the UK is completely different, and not compatible. Hence why it sucks the big one haha

The Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée and the Tintin Shop in Brussels had no problems with my Maestro card last time I was there. This is clearly Good and Bad at the same time.

You were both lucky and unlucky, in that case, that their card machine and bank supported the UK system.

Hence Visa debit. I believe MasterCard also offer debit card solutions of the top-up variety. My Visa Debit card is linked to my current account, so no problems there.

You realise that if you use a credit card you get extra protection for your purchase (if it's over £100) granted by S.75 of the Consumer Credit Act? You don't get any such protection from a debit card.

Maestro has worked for me wherever I have taken my business... Visa has caused one of my friends a lot of confusion, as he finds that if he orders something online, companies take the momeny out, put it back in, then take it out again later. Not a problem if your on top of things, but if you look at the ATM and find you have X amount and spend it, it might not be there when the company tries to take it out again... As I say, one friend has had a lot of problems because of this.
If HSBC give me a Visa then that's cool, as long as it works just as well and in exactly the same manner as my current Meastro, I'll be happy.

The only time I had any issues online was when I used Visa Credit card once. My card was debited twice for same transaction and took 3 months of back and forth arguing with Visa to get my money back.
This also happened once on my Maestro HSBC card but one phone call to HSBC and problem resolved instantly. This is why I won't use credit cards online again.
