I appreciate that's a sweeping kinda question but that was a conversation me and my mate were having the other day, and I meant to post it here to get others' opinions

We came to the conclusion there was nobody we could think of we'd even go to see for free

So is it just a 'blokes not getting the humour' thing, or what? :?

Certainly good ones are fewer and further between. I have to say that Ronnie Ancona (sp?) is really funny, but a lot of them do simply seem to be vulgar.

Personally I think Maureen Lipman is an incredibly funny comedienne

I always get her mixed up with Valerie Singleton for reasons I've never been able to determine

I quite like Maureen Lipman, Rita Rudner and I enjoy Jo Brands style of humour, but as a rule I like the boys better.

Yes, yes I did just say that I laugh at men!!

Jo Brand and Victoria Wood, Dawn French, Absolutely Fabulous - all pretty funny. However there are many more women on telly who 'think' they're funny who actually aren't - 2 Pints of Lager springs to mind(though the bloke saren't funny on that either). Drop The Dead Donkey, those crap comedies on BBC 3
When it comes to crap male comedians who think they're funny, only that squint eyed guy off Mock The Week springs to mind. Oh and Michael Macintyre (sp) thinks he's hilarious.

I quite like Sarah Silverman but she has a slight tendency to be outrageous for the sake of it. Perhaps to cover up the fact that she wouldn't be at all funny otherwise. Also she had some horrendous reviews when she was in the country a few months ago and I doubt I would pay much to see her live. See what you think. The language is NSFW

I was expecting the Matt Damon song there ;)

I think there are some, it's typically been a male industry I think, there are a few good comediennes (?) in the industry
(typically I can't remember their names)
There is a geordie comedian that is quite funny, she is quite quiet though
There is the girl from Flight of the Conchords
Gina Yasheree(?) - on Mock the week
Ronnie Ancona
Jo Brand

There are no doubt more, but they are fewer in number than the men or do other things also (Like Ronnie Ancona doing Dead Ringers)

I laughed at that but only because it was embarrassingly funny, if you know what I mean, her general stand-up is dull IMO...

Rita Rudner seems good though (Thanks Zippy):

Female comedians only seem to have one theme - men & sex. Gets a little boring after a while.

I like Lucy Porter...but mostly because she's kinda cute.

There are comedians that I don't find funny, and there are comediennes that I don't find funny, but as there appears to be less comediennes then there are few that I like.

I would pay to go and see Jo Brand and Gina Yashere is very good. There are a couple more females who have appeared on Mock the Week who have been very good, but their names won't come to mind. The woman who was on last week was awful. She hardly contributed and the one memorable moment when she did, it was vulgar and unfunny.

Although getting long in the tooth, Victoria Wood is also excellent.

Sarah Silverman- You can definitely put her back under whatever stone she was found beneath.

Edit- Lucy Porter. That's the one who I like on MtW

Have to agree, that seems to be the main theme doesn't it?

And I knew someone would mention Porter and cute in the same sentence

I think women can be very funny, especially in sketches and TV shows. Caroline Aherne, French & Saunders, etc. But as far as stand up comedy goes the guys (for me) have always been funnier.
