He can want all he likes. Given what Moffatt has set up in the last two series of Who, there's a couple of things you need to know about the next Doctor.

Firstly, she's black.

The article touches on memories of Who in the 1980s. Capaldi will remember this too, and what he says about the ritual about it tells me that his concerns reflect mine.

Doctor Who would be on Saturday evening, at around 6pm. That was every year, every episode. It used to follow Basil Brush in the 1970s. Even after the fox left the airwaves, Who remained a staple of BBC's Saturday evening output.

And then it was moved. The BBC had found a better time slot, they claimed. Doctor Who was moved to BBC2 on Tuesday's and Thursday's. At the same time as Coronation Street. Ratings plummeted, and Colin Baker, who had the TARDIS keys was out of a job for over a year as they tinkered with the notion of axing or continuing it (they returned with the trail of a time lord series). It retained its Coronation Street slot until it was axed just as they seemed to be getting back into the stride of it with Sylvester McCoy. Michael Grade, who was running the BBC at the time really didn't like science fiction, and wanted rid of this troublesomely popular programme. Seemed that some clever schedule rearranging helped.

Pitching Who against some tinsel-festooned moron pleasing talent show on ITV seems to show a lack of thought when it comes to viewing figures. If the intent was to prove that Who is getting unpopular, then they succeeded. Mind you, the last season also followed the BBC's very own tinsel-festooned moron pleasing talent show, which seemed to have a different duration each week. If the two programmes were the other way round, then there may have been better figures.
