Looking like it wasn't my job after all. Had an interesting conversation with the big boss this afternoon. Can't say anything yet, but... interesting... maybe.

I want a McDonalds milkshake and/or Coke. Maybe some fries, even more randomly.

Last weekend after a 400 mile round journey to a wedding, the missus and i decided to visit the maccyd drive through and pig out. Much better than the pretentious wedding food.

People on Faceballs excusing Boy George's 15 month prison sentence for false imprisonment.
Morons.

Child protection. Had a talk at my wife’s school with her an the head last Friday. I go in to help run Code Club, and the likelihood of a child telling me something is not remote. BY that I mean that because I’m not one of the regular female members of staff (I’m one of two men in the school who has contact with the children - not counting the caretaker) it is possible that kids - especially boys - see me as someone who can be confided in. Apparently it happens. Non-teachers are seen by kids as friends rather than teachers, so I have to be armed with procedures to follow if that happens.

So there’s things I’d have to do - which basically add up to “if a kid says or does something that feels wrong or off colour, reassure, listen and refer it to the head teacher”. Basically, we’re looking for signs of abuse and, I expect, extremism. I have to be non judgemental, tell the child I believe him/her but say that I can’t keep what they say a secret, and I have to tell someone who can help look after them. There’s forms to fill in as well. But it’s not my job to do anything else. They’d rather have false positives than nothing.

I did ask about if I come across something that’s really distressing to her - what support/help would I get to help me cope? Apparently, there are things in place for that.

When we spoke to the catering lady before we got married, the first thing we said to her was that we didn't want any poncy wedding food. It was Chicken Curry, Hotpots and other similar "proper food", served up on proper plates, and in portions large enough to fill up our guests because, let's be honest, going to a wedding and then having to stop for something to eat on your way home is a pain, isn't it?

Anyway, this lady was almost in tears! We instantly became her favourite couple of all time and she was super excited because she actually got to organise the sort of catering that she wanted at her own wedding.

Mastering visual effects for film and television.
The vast majority of effects work these days is done in a computer, and I suspect that for the films and TV shows that don't have particularly large budgets, those effects will remain in the digital domain, but for the shows and films that have the finincial resources, how do those effects get mastered?
I know that in the past VFX work was mastered to film, but with film stocks dwindling does mastering to film still happen?
Avatar is probably all 100% digital domain, but for other films like Inception, is that work output to film, then transferred back to digital for compositing, simply to retain quality?

I've tried looking for answers to this, but I'm either searching for the wrong terms, or there's no online resource that's able to provide an definitive answer.

Anyway, that's what's currently on my mind.

Mark

As far as I know, films shot directly on digital cameras are kept 100% digital throughout the process, in order to maintain quality. Going to film and back isn't going to improve the quality. Plus, the compression used in filming is generally lossless, I believe, not MPEG, so the masters are at a much higher quality than you see at home on Blu-Ray or over the Internet, cable or satellite.

Found out last night that someone that used to be my friend has been locked up for 20 years for child abuse and rape.

In shock and feel rather sick.
