I thought that as soon as we learned that David was the only person on the planet that gets found by a new set of explorers, then something had happened to Dr. Shaw that she wouldn't be in the film.

Lionsgate hires writers for new sequel SAW: Legacy
Are these films really that popular?
I think I've seen one of them, it had Danny Glover in it. I think. It really wasn't all that good.

Forgot to add that they're so cheap to make that popular barely comes into it. They were annual towards the end IIRC, and did the classic 'final SAW movie ever!'. Sort of the horror film equivalent of Cher's farewell tour.
