It was a hell of a dress! Which makes you wonder about some of the weirder choices on daytime Countdown... There was some sort of 60's effort the other day that belonged in the basement of a condemned tower block!

The sort of comment that the Carry On script writers would reject?

This might just be the ethanol talking but does anybody else find it sad that a person with such a beautiful brain is reduced to a physical object of desire?

That said, if she's happy, does it really matter?

Who says she is being 'reduced' to anything? Anyone with half an ounce of sense would say Rachel's intellectual ability is exceptional but that doesn't alter the fact she's also very attractive. You're rather projecting your own notion that 'attractiveness' is somehow less worthy characteristic than 'braininess' when in fact both are pretty much a lucky draw of the genes. Rachel just happened to get very lucky indeed to get both.

Rachel is clever. Rachel is pretty. The two statements are not mutually exclusive.

No I'm not - you're the one doing the 'projecting'

The reason I was sad was my awareness that although, as you say, 'Rachel is clever, Rachel is pretty', only one of those two is being celebrated, either in this thread or in the public sphere

Really? 'No, you are'?

Because you're presumably unaware of the way Rachel and her profile is used extensively to promote STEM subjects, especially to young girls. Or how she's a patron of the 'mind games' organisation, which is running an international series of competitions involving games that require brains rather than muscles. She's in plenty of public spheres primarily for being known to be clever, as much as pretty.

Rachel uses her profile as a smart person (and more so a smart woman, even though that shouldn't actually matter) in all sorts of ways. Because they're not really targeted at the likes of us, we're not necessarily aware of them.

That fact that she's both hot and smart makes her more attractive, in my opinion, so I dispute your charge that only her physical appearance is being celebrated.
