Naturally he has never done a backup or a anything

I could re-install W7 (tried a repair but no go) but he will lose everything - so he will chat to MS to see if there is anything they can do

Finally got the update. Installed without a hitch and working fine so far, although a lot of background processing so far.

Edge seems to be blindingly quick. I've never seen this site load as quickly!

So fa it seems pretty good, although I don't like the new start menu, the old Start Screen on Windows 8.1 was better - especially the "All Apps" view, it just uses the little column on the left, it doesn't use the whole menu, so you have to do a lot more scrolling than before. It isn't bad, but it is a step backwards in some ways.

This.

Funilly enough I was speaking to a friend yesterday and he was saying similar things, at least as far as using Win 10 on a tablet is concerned. New start menu is far less tablet friendly and he also hated the Edge browser compared to the 'modern' IE for tablet use.

You can change between a full size start screen and the reduced menu with one click in the notification area.

Personally, I think limiting the all apps section to a single column scrollable A-Z list is an improvement over the car crash method of filling the entire screen with hundreds of tiny icons.

I think they fit different use cases that it's hard to reconcile. Whether a list or a 'landscape' is better depends exactly what you're searching for and the cognitive process going on in the user's head. Ideally you provide a way to access either mode through the interface but then you run into the problem of having multiple ways to do everything - people tend to end up doing things only one way out of habit amyway.

Interface design - or at least good interface design - is a non-trivial task, even though you might think 'Oh, it's obvious, you just do it like THIS..'

Do you mean Tablet Mode? If so, it doesn't affect the "Start Menu", it affects the behavior of all applications / windows, everything is full screen.

Given I'm using an older notebook with poorly implemented touch-to-scroll functionality, I'd rather have the list across the screen and not have to scroll.

So you have to switch off all MS's intel-gathering options as I understand it, they scan your system for anything they don't like without justification, and force you to take updates that are already causing misery

This is what happens when you go outside the defined APIs for an operating system and start doing undocumented things. Those undocumented things are not supposed to exist and are a danger to the stability and safety of the PC, so will be closed at some point, in order to stop malware using them as well.

Exactly the same thing that could go wrong with Android, iOS, OS X and Windows 8. They all have the same capability. From the articles I've read, it only relates to Store apps. If the game is pirated, you only have yourself to blame - and to side-load a Store app, you know damned well, unless you are on the developers beta programme, that you are doing something that you probably shouldn't be.

Wow, the FUD machine certainly seems to have worked on you.

Mine is running Windows 10 and is fully patched, no problems here... And that is a 2010 Sony, which has been upgraded from 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 and not reinstalled, just in-place upgrades.

I am getting the nag screen to update my PC

I will get a bigger SSD 1st (as only have a 100gb at the moment and this is almost full) and get a 240 or, if I can get it past the budget committee, a 500 as they are coming down in price

& then cross my fingers and see what happens. (I back up all the important stuff on a regular basis so its just the faf of re-installing everything if it goes wrong that I am worried about)

Apart from MS not learning from their Xbox debacle on attempts to curb piracy, people punching in Windows codes that it tells them aren't recognised and so on... They've got a worse history than most.

Everything I've heard about 10 so far is some attempt to scan your system and usage in some way, often under the BS security reasoning that hasn't bothered them for decades... As above, these are all the issues that cost them millions at the start with the Xbox that they abandoned or fell by the wayside. Speaking of Xbox, it's not just Windows potentially affected, it's millions of others too when they start messing about with little reason.

Most of the scanning it does was there in 7 more in 8 and it is little different to Android and iOS... </shrug>

The pirate software / games only seems to apply to online games, according to Windows Weekly.
