Why do people insist on office Xmas parties when they're nothing but awkward? And especially for blokes!

The staff have decided they'd prefer a xmas bonus to a xmas party.

Our Xmas parties are awesome, legendary, everyone has a brilliant time and they are talked about for the first half of the next year!

For us, it's really about the receptionists/nurses etc. The doctors end up on one half of the table/their own table. They go because they have to.

We have such a disparate bunch of people that it never works. Geeks aren't gonna put their head above the parapet, the girls are all talking about reality TV, people are pissed off to start with...

Have to? How do you make someone go to a Christmas party? Surely they could just say they're not Christian and not turn up.

"Social convention". It's a relatively small practice so unless you've a good reason not to go, you're expected to be there. Otherwise everyone will want to know why you're not. I'm the youngest by about 15 years which makes it more awkward for me.

Social convention isn't a 'have to' in my opinion.

I land at 22:00. The last train leaves at 22:35. Will I get through the terminal, across to the railway station and get a ticket in time?
If not I've got at least a sixty quid taxi ride in front of me.

The Big Bang Theory says it is, therefore it is.
