Yeah you're absolutely right. It's not much of an achievement to be in the top grossing apps list.

Well I was commenting on the story that was posted. And, to be honest, being number 21 when The Economist is number 19 isn't all that impressive, no. Thing is with the App store the top 10 or so make bucket loads of money, beyond that it's more tumblers of money.

Well I wish I had the media presence and business accumen to create a game like that. In July Forbes predicted she would make $85 million from the game. How much would it take for you to think a game was successful? $85 million is a lot to me and not a 'tumbler' of money.

Flappy Bird was pretty successful - it did very little, but offered some frustrating gameplay that people found addictive, and ran adverts. The cash came from there.

I expect that the Kardashian game has a number of tie-ins, sponsorship deals and other advertising/sponsorship that raise the revenue.

So do I. I just rather doubt the person that did that is Kim Kardashian. Very much more likely a company made a game that vaguely fit and hired her to front it for a set fee. She has the media presence, certainly. And I suspect she has a very smart agent. The rest? I'm thinking no. I'm going with 'can just about tie her own shoelaces'.

'Forbes prediction'. Hahahaha. Sorry. Any figures of how much money has actually been made from it?

It is mainly down to in app purchases. You can do very little in the game without K$ or whatever the in game currency is called.

Some people were paying out hundreds of real dollars for in game currency.

And that isn't unusual, unfortunately. One US reporter admitted to spending over $400 on donuts for the Simpsons sim game.

The Simpsons game does poke itself in the eye occasionally. One character (I think it was Krusty) was noting that people balk at paying $60 for a full game, but will happily throw away hundreds for donuts (the games premium currency).

The IAP thing is indeed interesting. Research suggest each game is played by a large number of people who pay next to nothing and a small group of people who spend what to the non-player's eyes are ludicrous sums of money. I believe these people are known as 'whales' in the trade, although I've never quite figured where that comes from.

The major point though is this - the iPhone app market has become incredibly polarised. Some games make literally fortunes - $85m isn't an unrealistic figure in that regard - but they are very few and the vast majority never attract the 'whales' they need and make next to nothing. Given where Kim's game is in the 'top grossing' charts, I very much doubt it's made anywhere near the figure the prediction suggested. IIRC at around the 20th best mark, the figure is something less than $1m a year. Now that's a not a small amount of money of course but when you consider all the expenditure involved to get it there, I suspect her share is closer to 'a good living' than a fortune.

I never said she created the game herself. It is released under her brand just like a lot of things the Kardashian's do.

I used Forbes as an example of how the game is successful. I'm sure you can go on Google and get some figures for yourself.

Again how much do you earn? I would put $1 million a year as pretty successful especially for her first game.

Not sure what you are trying to acheieve by all this. No matter what we think of her Kim is a successful business woman and a hell of a lot more successful than any of us. If you think she's an under achiever then that's fine. Carry on but I'm not going to bite any more.

Which bit of "when you consider all the expenditure involved to get it there, I suspect her share is closer to 'a good living' than a fortune." wasn't clear? Do you actually think that if the game makes $1m in revenue (tell me I don't have to explain the difference between 'gross' and 'net' at this point) she will make anything approaching that from it? suspect she's made roughly $50K, which is in the order of £35K I think. Which is pretty nearly exactly my definition of 'a good living'.

Illumination.

Depends entirely on your definition. Personally I don't consider Kim Kardashian to be a 'success' in any but the most crass and, frankly, slightly unpalatable terms. I actually have no desire to be a 'success' in those term at all and your implication of jealousy in some form is laughable.

I hate the Daily Mail but often read it for sh*ts and giggles. Josie Cunningham. A sl*g who will do anything to get into the public eye. Scammed a boob job on the NHS. Wanted to induce an abortion through smoking and drinking if a baby boy when she found out she was pregnant. And now likens breastfeeding to incest. Some people need to be removed from the population. She is one of them.

I caught a glimpse of the breast feeding and incest thing. Why is there no natural selection in humans?
