Guardians of the Galaxy Crushes Box Office Records With $94M Opening

From the comments:

"It's been said a lot but still must be repeated:
Warner Bros has said for years that Wonder Woman is too complex and difficult a property for movie-goers to get into.
Disney/Marvel just made nearly $100 million off a movie where a talking raccoon fires a machine gun while standing on the shoulders of a giant walking plant. In space."

I lol'd at that too.

Went and saw this over the weekend - really enjoyed it and so to did SWMBO. 2 hrs of total escapisum

And there goes half your audience. Jesus Christ.
I'm not entirely sure I follow the logic there.

Mine or theirs? The guy's noted for female-friendly films at the box office. The sort of shows a lot of blokes wouldn't touch with a forty foot pole, and with good reason. I wouldn't be surprised if someone looked at their big demographic wall chart, saw that women liked ghost/horror movies, and decided to combine the two tbh.

For some reason, I'm not a big fan of female-led action shows. Probably to do with being unable to identify with the protagonist. Hence I liked watching Angel but rarely watched Buffy. Ditto with Hercules and Xena.

I'm struggling to think of a good female action film unless you include the Alien series, and those have big supporting casts and wider stories. You've to go beyond the mainstream for female action roles really, and so they're rarely good films overall. But that was true of Tomb Raider too. A Black Widow film would have a lot of potential, though I hear Luc Besson hasn't did Johansson any favours with Lucy.

I too preferred Angel, but that had tighter scripts and more interesting stories IMO. Wonder Woman as a TV series could be epic. If they downplayed her early days a little while building it up slowly, and then flashbacked that with Metropolis, they could use all the DC villains like Arrow has done. It,s really showed the way there.

I felt the original became a movie of two halves, so I'm less dismissive. But yeah, Kitsch is a bit bland.

Between how ham-fisted ASM2 was and the sheer challenge of those characters above, Sony hasn't got much of a hope. It just looks like they're throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.

8-) , I'm curious as to what was cut from the second half; it was OK but the first was stellar.

Hollywood fails to represent US ethnic diversity, says study
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/au ... -study-usc

I never know what to think of those sort of studies really. It's obviously far from an ideal situation, but I can't help thinking it's really reflecting America itself. You only have to watch the average American comedian these days, they're absolutely obsessed with race. And usually as an excuse to trot out stereotypes that everybody but the Top Gear team left behind years ago.

Megan Fox lashes out at critics of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

"Let me tell you something about those people," said Fox. "How much money did Transformers 4 make? Exactly. Those people can complain – they all go to the theatre. They're gonna love it – and if they don't love it, they can [LIFTED] off, and that's the end of that."

And that's precisely why I gave up after Transformers 2, love.

I don't know why people keep pitting Marvel against DC

They need an angle. Plus nobody is exactly confident in DC/WB after Green Lantern and MoS underperforming.

How you can say a film that made close to $700 million "under performing" is beyond me.

The studio looks at the way those numbers are made up - IIRC it made just under 300 in North America total, which isn't great in the grand scheme of things, it basically covers it's budget but maybe minus promos, who knows... The other 400 is once you convert to dollars as I understand it, so not great there either. I've a feeling they took the hit worldwide in it's second week, and they obviously want a franchise so that doesn't encourage them.

We have totally different perception of money to what the studios do. They were always gonna make money in the long run, but in all probability it should have made more.
