I'm not so sure it's currently a problem. If it is, it's down to advertising; smaller films just don't have it. And these days a smaller film will likely be a cheap horror show that can be sequeled to death and rebooted three to five years later. The mainstream wants disposable crap, they generally go to the cinema for entertainment, not some borefest (though that's increasinly typical). And they're probably only doing it once in a blue moon too.

Quality and the stupendously promoted sh1t stick around until enough people tell their friends whether it's good or bad. One way or another, it's not often you get a truly good film at the cinema these days, so what are your chances of catching it if you've already been bitten three or four times in a row?
