To my mind, that's a potentially good list, as far as movies go these days. Sherlock there, for some reason I'm curious about the Dwayne Johnson film against all instinct, Ridley Scott news (could go either way), and Seven Wonders at least sounds a little different.

Cinema is in rude health financially no matter how you cut it - even if a film 'flops', you get stupid bites of the cherry with DVDs, the various VOD outfits, TV rights, merchandising... and that's before you claim your bottom line next to nothing and blame Babylon 5. It's bookies odds at this point.

If people stop going to the cinema it's because of the quality of the overall films, same as music. There comes a tipping point of, well, 'What's the point? Everything's generic now.' If the superhero bubble bursts I could imagine the studios will greenlight just about anything in their script trays, once they've remade or rebooted their back catalogue of course.

You do realise that this film has been and gone from the cinemas over here and that this story is basically just for the US market? (8+)

It was a film I was never gonna watch at the cinema after seeing the first trailer, so no, I didn't read it or even watch the trailer! Plus, how the bloody hell can I be expected to remember every international release date?

I read his full article and he does make some good points.
Cinema - the venue, not the medium - has to provide something that audiences aren't getting at home. That I agree with.
I totally rejected his notion that when I walk in to a screen that is half-empty I despair.
He was making reference that the cinema experience is akin to going to a concert; nobody goes to a concert expecting it to be only half-full, just as he argued nobody rejoices at being the only person in a cinema screening.
Well, the less people in the screening the better, for me anyway.
His main point being that home viewing is much more of a solitary experience, but the cinema is (or should be) a group, shared experience.
He also made a point of mentioning why there's so many big budget action films these days, and that's simply because TV can't provide that level of spectacle.
That further differentiates between the small (solitary) screen experience at home and the large (cinema) screen experience.

The primary reason for going to the cinema for me is to be entertained. I buy my nachos, popcorn, sweets and drink. I'm not a fan of trailers these days but I love the comfy seats. I would never go alone but would prefer to go with friends or family so we have something to share the experience of and to chat about after. I prefer to watch big blockbuster films with high visuals and sound. It should have a decent enough plot to be entertaining.

Otherwise I can watch a film on my PS3/TV/iPad/laptop whilst tucked up in bed with snacks and drink. The only problem is that I'm more likely to be interrupted at home than at the cinema. I can generally pause whatever I'm watching for a loo break if needed.

I can kinda see what they mean about changing content. They could easily change one screen to show a different film if there's enough demand for it. Certainly, when I saw Noah, the cinema was ram packed. They could have opened another screen for it to relieve some of the pressure.

I've only been to the cinema so much recently because I've been off work; the truth is out of all the films I've seen this year, the only one I could say was good the whole way through was Cap. 2, with X-Men DOFP coming close. Everything else felt like '100 people were asked what they wanted from a movie...'.

I wouldn't have watched any thrillers or whatever only for having the time and it being cheap Tuesday or Thursday - I might as well watch those at home, and they're likely to go VOD sooner rather than later. On that point, I fully expect VOD to be blamed in future. It'll be a falsehood. The honest truth is that the average 1 hour TV episode hasn't had four or five writers, two or three different directors and a load of cast changes before filming!

If you get out of the habit of media consumption, you're unlikely to go back. Ever. That's as true for cinema as it is for every genre of music, newspapers and magazines, books. Hell, just reading...

Soon I'll be back in the habit of hoping my mate wants to go see something, and probably catching the film at home as a result. The rest of my mates got out of the habit long ago. The same way they stopped buying music and reading

Just on the snacks issue, for a greedy git and Coke fiend I don't actually enjoy snacks in the cinema while watching a film. I think I like to focus on the film in that particular atmosphere, where as at home I pig out but only with TV shows.

Yes, but usually shared with morons who can't shut up or put their bloody phones away. On average I go to the cinema less than once a year now.
