For what it's worth, I like prof's retro classified ad - not sure why, it just makes me smile that's all.

If that's all it does, then job done. :)

At the moment I don't think there is a theme.

I think the theme will be set by whichever logo we eventually decide to go with.

Steve, those logos are amazing! I like all three of the colours.

I think having them change randomly might get a bit annoying but to have three skins with the same layout and logo but with red, green or blue colour schemes might be a good idea. Then you could choose your option from the Control Panel.

I also agree about the layout thing Steve. As long as you know a bit about css (or whatever) I'm sure it's possible to have any layout.

Out of interest, steve74, what software did you use to make those gorgeous logos? I think they would look amazing with a matching theme :D

Peter.

I'm liking some of the designs coming out of this comp, steve74 has come up with a good concept.

steve, that looks amazing. As for your 'unfair advantage', i care more that the forum gets a nice, professional, logo and banner rather than the competition :)

The first one I did (the windows "x" button) was just done in Adobe Illustrator CS. The second one (the "PC") was started in Illustrator using the 3D Extrude and Revolve tool, then brought it into Photoshop to add the shadows and highlights and adjust the colours a bit. I'd love to be able to master Illustrator's Gradient Mesh tool for creating more organic blends, but it's so hard to use I find it's easier (and quicker) to add these bits in Photoshop instead. I've seen some amazing stuff other people have done with the Gradient Mesh tool, but whenever I try it just turns out a complete mess! One of these days I'll get my head round it...

I like the layout and fill effect, but im not so keen on the jagged edges... would need some work.

maybe i should start playing with illustrator... :P

I like the layout, maybe it needs to be a bit 'chunkier' typeface so it's strong enough when used smaller? I don't mind the jaggedness (is that a word?) kind of gives it a computerised feel to me. Not sure, but is it a requirement to have the ".co.uk" part in the logo itself - maybe try adding it as a third line? Though I think it's strong enough without the .co.uk part - what do others think?

I don't see why it's needed. Compare the beautiful Dennis logos:

The logos on the BBC, Apple and most other sites are a similar size and very minimal. You don't need the web address because it's on the address bar already. You don't need complex graphics because they're messy and distracting. You just need an instantly recognisable identity; and preferably one that fits on a 40 pixel wide banner.

I think they look great and I still like the first blue variant too. Good work fella!

Hmmm. I'm sure that PC Pro logo reminds me of something. An "entry" on page 1, which seems to have gone...

;)

But they do have certain advantages, such as being easily resizable and not too garish, as some of us visit the forum at work, and don't really want to draw attention to our online activities.

They may well be "boring" but they don't age quickly. If you design something that's flashy and now, it looks like yesterday's warmed-over leftovers within a short while.

You only need to look around at the logos you see every day to see the ones that have stood the test of time are the "boring" ones. ;)
