My phone. I'm almost certain I picked it up off the desk when I left work yesterday, but I can't find it anywhere.

It was an observation as to what somebody else said. As for Google's suggestions, I never pay them any attention - they're sponsored, so they're not what's best for you, they're whoever has paid Google most.

I do always avoid the first three or so links as they are "sponsored". Though usually find any link that I want on the first few pages. While I might get angry at their constant privacy invasions, for example why does a game want to connect to connect to google? It is never enough to orchestrate anything worse than a personal switch to another search engine.
The actual assessment of Google is pretty accurate though. How many people do all their mail or searches through Google? As a percentage I suspect it might be quite a few. If they were taken down they would seriously interrupt my viewing of Youtube videos subscriptions but not much else. Though I suspect that many others would have very serious problems particularly Android phone users. I wonder how much stuff the phones send back home? Certainly updates would be impacted as would many who use a lot of social sites. I know that my internet usage would be impacted as I use Open DNS which I think is run by Google.

Android wouldn't be unduly affected. Updates come through the handset makers and the providers, which generally means a year's wait or more. I gave up on my Galaxy S3, I now have Cyanogenmod on it, with Android 4.4, Samsung released 3.3 last week, I had 3.3 on mine for months.
If Google stopped, the open source version of Android would keep going. The App Store could be replaced by one of the others, I have my contact and calendar synced through my company's Exchange account and my Hotmail account. There isn't much that would stop working, only the Google services themselves, and I don't use any of them with any regularity.

How the hell is the Guardian still operating*? They've got articles and columnists for just about everything under the sun** - even their new ad is essentially about 'overload'.
* Private Eye said a few years ago that they were haemorrhaging money even then. ** And I'm addicted.

Generally by the sort of practices that they utterly decry when other companies using them. Staff on zero hours contracts, tax evasion etc etc etc...
They're massive hypocrites, but then so is every newspaper you can buy...

That's what I figure too, especially the tax evasion (Eyes passim as the magazine says), but it still wouldn't cover it lol.
