They add chemicals to a cigarette to make them more addictive. I've got a breakdown somewhere, I'll dig it out

I think most are to make it keep burning but there is added nicotine I think which is the primary addictive compound.

afaik no major cig firm adds any nicotine. Its all from the tobacco used. As for adding stuff to keep it alight that would go against all the legislation to reduce fires caused by dropped cigs.

They add certain things to make the cigarette burn hotter and therefore vaporise the nicotine faster resulting in better absorption.

I need to find that breakdown I've got

I think that they also breed tobacco with much higher nicotine levels.

You obviously havent spotted the bit on the side of a fag packet that states the amount of nicotine per cig under the FTC method. Yhe only reason for breeding a higher nicotine tobacco is because the higher the nicotine level the higher the cost of the tobacco and since most tobacco companies do not grow their own tobacco but source it on the open market. The growers beneifit the most. Using a higher nicotine level tobacco means that they can use lower cost tobacco and still hit the levels as defined on the pack.

As a non smoker (I gave up when I was 8), I do not pay much attention to cigarette industry. So things like nicotine per fag does not register with me.

Are the EU going to restrict these sort of things?
News CLICKY
Quote:
Electronic cigarettes would become a medicinal product under new measures from the EU Commission which are being considered by MEPs.

The devices are designed to replicate smoking behaviour without the use of tobacco.

The EU Commission proposal also includes a ban on menthol cigarettes, along with other flavoured tobacco.

They'll try. Although they won't be able to stop people, they'll only be able to restrict over the counter sales

I find the idea of banning flavoured tobacco just plain daft.
It's a bit like banning all whiskies except the heavily peated ones as you hope the flavour will put people off from drinking whisky (alcohol) at all.
A) It's not going to work, and B) it's unneccesserily restricting people's freedom to choose.

I think that the authorities are more concerned about attracting kids, and flavoured tobacco would do a pretty good job.

They could try and do something about stopping kids getting hold of cigs in the first place, whether there is flavours added or not, kids will still smoke. Most underaged users do not smoke flavoured tobacco of any sort as it tends to be either expensive or pipe tobacco. They tend to go for the cheap brands.
