It might be useful for those purposes. I thought the same about the Kindle Fire with Amazon services.

I do think that for Tesco customers it might be a good option especially if you had subscribed to the Blinkbox service. I might not consider it for anything else, but it is cheap.

Tesco's ongoing £10 off scheme and so on would mean you'd get the tablet even cheaper

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/tablets ... ily%20newsIf that's correct, the Surface is about to fail all over again. The consumer doesn't see or care about software, licensing, patents etc, all they know is it's a tablet that's way more expensive than it's rivals. The keyboard coupled with the slightly larger than normal tablet screen would be a winner if they could get over themselves and look at the bigger picture. Sold right it could potentially kill off laptops for many, and help take away 8's stigma.

It might be more expensive than other tablets but other than Apple they are all struggling to make any profits from tablets. The lower specced version is cheaper than the iPad and the more powerful are more expensive than the iPads.

I'm not so sure all the tablet makers are losing out, there's too many of them at it for that. Does the price difference include the keyboard though? It's worth remembering that the advertised drive space probably doesn't cover the Windows installation again too.

Most of them also make windows PCs or flatscreen tellys and there's been hardly any profit in either of those markets for years. If you can get volume, low profit margin isn't so much of an issue. However (IMO) there's too many of them to carve up the market between them and them all keep making a worthwhile profit. I'm pretty sure some will fall by the wayside soon enough. First generation included the touch cover which is dire. The type cover is somewhat better. Dunno which the new model will get.

But you have the same or more powerful hardware as the MacBook Air, but people don't complain that that is more expensive than an iPad... The Surface Pro is literally that, a tablet for professionals. The only way to sink the price further would be to use an Atom processor. For the Surface 2 (RT), it is priced reasonably, it is a bit cheaper than the iPad, but includes full Office 2013 support, something which Apple has reacted to by including iWorks on new iPads. I still wouldn't buy a Surface 2, the Surface 2 Pro is on my list though. I still don't see what an ARM processor brings to the mix, it is slower than the Atom tablets, doesn't offer any advantage in battery life (compared to Atom based tablets) and it doesn't allow you to run legacy software. It only offers about a 50 Euro price saving over the equivalent Atom versions, although the Atom versions usually have double the storage and WACOM or similar digitizer technology.

If you think of it as a laptop then it looks good value, though it looks like a tablet and so could be crippled by the customers lack of knowledge about its true capabilities. If they see it as a tablet it looks overpriced. The hybrid market is a bit of a niche market and I do not think it does either segment particularly well. If the surface pro can run full windows programs then it could take share away from high end laptops as it might be more practical and would have more apps immediately. Personally I want to see Microsoft do well as it would force Google and Apple to improve their designs.

If the marketing works, then it could outsell the smaller Air. Anyone know how many that's sold?

I'm actually inclined to say it's a laptop they claim is for professionals, but I can't imagine a lot of professionals buying them instead of the competition. I could see creative artists buying them, given the stylus really is good but I can't imagine (for example) a MBA type having one rather than a macbook air or competitor's ultra book. I've got both a surface pro and a macbook air and they're miles apart as products, not favourably for the surface.

Oh, if that was a bet... I don't think Apple break down their sales numbers that granularly, at least not publicly. IIRC they split desktop and laptop but no further than that.
