We have a policy at work where you can dress whatever you like as long as it's appropriate.
This means the developers end up wearing jeans & T-shirts and the only time you see them smart is if they are going out to see a customer.
Management & the support guys on the other hand wear a shirt & trousers as they never know when they'll be in front of a client.

tbh I'd much rather wear a shirt & trousers to work anyway, puts me in a working mood

My last job was like that - I used to wear shorts & T shirts in the summer and jeans and T shirt in the winter

I had that a couple of jobs back. Casual wear really doesn't help my productivity

It's still not what shows I care about my job. That's demonstrated by the quality of the work I do, not in what I wear to do it. (8+)

As resident nerd I'm often asked to sort that crap out too, and it's literally a pain when you're my height.

Well my job involves representing the company to clients. If I did that dressed like a knob I wouldn't be doing that properly and first impressions can mean a lot. I don't expect you to understand or agree.

I'm quite lucky in that I work for a company who are quite laid back about dress-code. I dress according to how I feel on the day (and the events that are happening that day) but mostly people wear jeans and shirts or tops, even our sales guys team jeans with shirts and sometimes jackets and they are customer-facing. I am the PA to one of the VPs of the company and personal expression is valued highly so apart from the odd occasion where I went to work dressed in full evening dress complete with corset:


Or Even dressed as a Christmas Tree, complete with fairy-lights after which we had our party:


I don't really raise much in the way of eyebrows. My favourite day was the last day at work before my radiotherapy treatment week earlier in the year. I decided it was my last day as a "cancer sufferer" and went to work in the most garish and clashing outfit I could put together, a long, ginger curly wig and pick 40's style hat:



I got a really good response from my Speedo family, but I think very little I could do now would surprise anyone

While I agree with timark - in principle unfortunatly in the real word people make snap value judgements on how you look.

I happen to think I am not bad at what I do BUT if I had turned up at the interview in tatty jeans, a dirty T shirt and old trainers I would not have got the job - unfair but that life.

I have to say as well that when I have recruited people and the advert is that its an office job if they cant even be bothered to turn up smart then they are already at the bottom of the pile and wopuld have to be amazing to get the job. When I have had interviews I have always asked what the dress code is for the firm / dept so that I can dress accordingly (apart form the odd phone intervew which I have done in my dressing gown )
