Are smartphones killing memories?

Quote:
The habit of taking photographs, usually with our phones, of anything and everything is everywhere - instead of enjoying things or engaging in them, there is a growing habit just of photographing them.

It is as if first hand events are not real unless we have a photo, and can experience them second hand.

When, for example, the Queen recently opened the BBC's Broadcasting House, she could hardly be seen for all the people holding up their phones.

Don't ask me I did not have one before I got a smart phone! 8-)

I think they are. Go back to the time of film cameras - you took photos, got them developed and then sat around looking through them. Now rather recently, my sister had her anniversary. I was one of two people there with a camera - everyone else was trying to take pics of smartphones. Will we ever get to see them? Probably not. I'm not on facebook or twitter or anything else like that.

Not smartphones per say, just phones with address books. I can still remeber friends numbers from the 1980's as I had to dial them by hand. I have no idea of any of my current friend's phone numbers.

Yes.
Phones are as much digital life validation devices as anything else these days.
I'm as guilty as the next person, I suppose.

I can not remember peoples numbers, though before the memory loss, I was like you and able to master international numbers without a problem.

Exactly. I know probably a dozen numbers from people now (and that is mainly because we have sequential numbers for company mobiles), the rest are just in my phone book. Back in the old days, I had the numbers of all of my friends and family in my head.

What surprises me is that so many people do not have a back up of their phone data, particularly contact details.
