Most people now regard it as essential. It really should be considered as essential.

I'll add frequent public transport.
I come from a small town without 2 buses a day and I think I've become complacent to the fact that I can get a bus within 5 minutes of waiting and a train every 10 mins. Beats having to ask for lifts all the time.

I can believe that I'm the first person to say this, but...

I've got a little thing that makes a big difference in my life... ;)  :etc:

Cats.

To be totally honest, I have never known life without cats, so I’m not sure if they count or not. They aren’t something that just turned up one day and made my life better, I just expect that I’d feel a lot worse if there weren’t any around. They do keep me company during the day, and they provide a sense of warmth to the house that can’t really be measured subjectively. At least one will check on me during the day, and will want some kind of attention.

And yet I was the first person to mention it. (8+)

Mark

It was the first thing I thought of, but I didn't consider it a "small thing".

+1 although I grew up with dogs so any 4 legged friend makes me happy. Cats are just easier to look after.

Coke ;)

Kindle

PS3 and wireless headphones - games and films at all hours!

My phone with slide-out keyboard, I'd go spare in work without it.

I love poetry, and a glass of scotch, and, of course, my friend Baxter here.

That moment in a film where the director stops and just decides to look at how beautiful our planet is.

And that moment in life when it happens to you, you sit and almost everything 'human' melts away, it's just you and the universe.

The chill in the air and smell of trees after a warm summer's day.

The nature of light and colours at sunrise.

Your friend taking the piss out of you and making you smile after a hard day.

Talking to someone who gets it.
