The discussion we were having was whether vocational qualifications are equivalent to A-Levels, though

I have three friends who are at UEA, and they love it.

Two are doing a science. Think it's marine biology or environmental science, I can't remember.

But the other is doing Computer Science and he loves it, just finished his second year. One of the things they all realy like about the uni is that it's main campus either incorporates or backs onto a nice big lake and woodland which is nice.

HAAHAHAHA! That first line did make me chuckle slightly And I think I would be living in the city though, I've got the money to be able to, so I doubt I would need to really move out of it.

Still on the look out for some Uni's though!!

They wouldn't let you do BTEC after your GCSE's otherwise.

Yeup, another 4 pages of it. Really, could we just drop it? The fact is the courses ask for either. To me? That doesn't matter, as long as I get on, I couldn't care less what the other person has. Just stop damning my qualifications!!

Going to university with a diploma will give you an advantage over those who did A-levels, so don't worry about it.

Each unis although they may have good IT may focus on different areas, especially as there are so many different vocations to look at

I'm not going to comment on qualifications as I've got Scottish ones and they tend to bork discussions about English ones (can you do a BTEC in Scotland?).

MBM, you said you didn't react well to classroom type teaching. Make sure you go to as many open days as you can an find out what proportion of the course you are interested in is based on practical/labs and how much is lectures. In my experience, lectures are just big classrooms (I did Applied Chemistry). With all the unis out there, if you want a more hands on, practical course then I'm sure you'll be able to find it.

UEA & Norwich (or Narich). You say you want to get away from all the cows round where you live. Bear in mind that, as others have alluded to, UEA/Norwich is very isolated relative to a great many other Uni cities. It's basically surrounded by fields of crops or pigs. You do get some spectacular 'big sky' views though.

Having gone to university in Glasgow I'd thoroughly recommend having a good look at any of the Unis there. The city is fantastic as well (but then I'm biased). Glasgow University (based mainly in the West End of the city) and the University of Strathclyde (slap bang in the city centre), depending on which course you want to do, are probably level pegging. Based on my own experience, Glasgow seems to let you chop and change your course much more than Strathclyde. I picked Strathclyde as I felt their Chemistry course was better at the time I applied. Glasgow Caledonian (also in the city centre) is a former Poly. It's got some stonking new buildings though. When I was at uni it was regarded as a bit of a poor relation to the other two (reflected in its admission requirements) but it depended very much on the course you wanted to do. Paisley university is also very close to Glasgow but I don't know enough about it to comment.

Bear in mind that, as an English student you will probably get direct entry into the second year of a Scottish university course (but they are typically a year longer than their English counterparts). I'm not convinced this is a good thing TBH. We had a few direct entry students in second year and they had missed out on their fellow students first year together so had a bit of catching up to do in terms of getting to know folk.

I can thoroughly endorse doing a course with an industrial placement/sandwich year. It's a fantastic experience.

I seem to recall that there are some funny rules if you want to apply to Oxbridge (like you can't apply to other universities in the same year). Still, if that;s still true there is always clearing. I was also under the impression that, as far as Oxbrige were concerned, they have so many people with epic numbers of A levels or equivalent thrown at them that they are far more interested in meeting the person at an interview. What you have to do to get to the interview I'm not sure.

Well, it's in Paisley. Paisley is notable for two things, AFAIC, David Tennant hails from there, so does the deep fried Mars bar. Other than that, it's a [LIFTED] hole. Avoid.
