Why is wintel fluctuating at the bottom of its blob and the others fluctuating at the top?

The vertical axis represents 100% of the market.
So the combination of Wintel + Others = Entire Market Share.
As the Others grow or shrink at the bottom of the graph, so the Wintel section fluctuates in sympathy.

It's like a stacked bar chart.

It misses Linux unless it is included in the Android figures.

For "personal" computers it's simply too small to register - it's probably in with "other" which is vanishingly small a little way into the graph. If it included servers and embedded systems such as routers and microwaves then Linux would probably swamp the entire picture.

I'm quite surprised at those who couldn't interpret the graph. It seemed very straightforward. What surprises me is that I thought iOS would have a larger share of the market in recent years.

It's not that I couldn't work out that Wintel had a massive market share around 90%, I just felt it was confusing how the red of Apple is high up on the left of the graph in line with the 90% on the y axis and it goes "down" to around 10% by the mid 90s. I think it all stems from the y axis being labelled 0-100% bottom to top, it shouldn't be labelled at all, the percentage readings aren't read from the y axis, they're read from the relative sizes of the shapes.

So yeah, it's not because I'm an idiot, it's because I like my graphs to be a little less glamorous and a little more precise.

You need something on the y-axis, be it percentages, cost in GBP, sales in in 100,000s etc.

There is something on the Y-axis.
'Market Share of Personal Computing Platforms by Operating Systems'.
I read that as number of units sitting on peoples desktops - this is 'personal' computing, not corporate.
It's a pretty simple graph to read isn't it? You look along to see what the spread was in, say, 1979.

'Other' is about 40%, TRS-80 is about 40%, Atari is about 15% and Apple is about 5%.

In relation to those two lock designs? You can still open the door from the inside and the key would still open it.

Interesting... The Tapatalk 4 Beta didn't copy the quoted text, only my reply... :?

Yes, I did mean the locks, otherwise the answer would have been "You can't use your phone until you charge it"

That only works if you remember to carry the key. After months of not getting the key out how many would still carry the key? ;)

If it was me, I'd have a key somewhere hidden on the property but not in the house.

Yes it would make sense but if burglars could see the lock they could work out that home owners did something similar and would look under fake rocks and under flowerpots.
