ORIGIN Middle English : via Old French from Latin herba ‘grass, green crops, herb.’ Although herb has always been spelled with an h, pronunciation without it was usual in British English until the 19th cent. and is still standard in the U.S.

Hmm. Well, okay then. Preserve ancient English dialects in aspic if you like. Or if you will. :x

English is our language. :D We get to mutilate it not some upstart country that has been around shorter than my nans house!
I always thought the latin herba is pronounced with the H?

Yeah, that's a good one. But why do we have platinum and not platinium? Or titanium and not titanum?

I'm going to stop there before I confuse myself. :D

We get burgled, the Americans get burglarised. Now there’s a bugger of a word to pronounce, and spell  If someone kills you, you don’t get murderised do you :D

I am hearing strange pronunciations on TV programmes. I am hearing “nukular” instead of “nuclear” more and more from Americans. The word “missile” is pronounced “misal” which is a form of prayer book - ironic considering the Yanks have been lobbing them around Muslim countries of late.

I am also hearing a distinct failure to pronounce double consonants properly. What is a “miyor” or a “woyer”? Why, “mirror” and “warrior”.

American is rapidly becoming a dialect, it will eventually become a proper foreign language with English roots.

The 'merkin pronunciation of 'mirror' grinds my gears. As does the phrase 'winningest', which I first heard on an episode of Rides. As in 'He's the winningest dirt bike rider of 2001' or something.

Yeah, that one is odd, especially as they pronounce automobile "ottomobeel".

Strange people.
