Last week I watched The Sky at Night for the first time in a very long time, and I noted just how badly time had worn on him. He seemed to be struggling to string coherent sentences together. I seem to recall that in the fairly recent past he'd had some sort of health scare.
It's still saddening to hear of someone I essentially grew up with (I used to watch his show regularly when I was younger) having died. He's been an almost constant presence on BBC TV in one way or another for the entirety of my lifetime. A very knowledgable person whose intellect and insight will be missed.

Sir Patrick has been unwell for some time. He's not been quite right since he got food poisoning a few years ago.
It was only a matter of time, but it's still a little sad to think he's finally left us. The programme producers have been busily adding presenters to the mix so there would be capable hands to continue the show. I guess there'll be more on location work, and now Moore's Selsey home won't be available - presumably - they might have to hire a studio occasionally.
RIP Patrick.

That's sad news. Sir Patrick did more to enthuse children about astronomy than anyone else I can think of. When we set up a small school astronomy club we wrote to him and he came and gave a slideshow lecture to the school. He wanted no money for expenses and was friendly and courteous to anyone who wanted to talk to him or ask him to sign a book. I've got my signed Observer's book of Astronomy and Norton's Star Atlas on the bookshelf. R.I.P.

Very sad. As above, he was part of my childhood though in the way of Gamesmaster. It was only when Inwas in my twenties that I appreciated him for his astronomy. It's something I always wanted to get into but lack of time and money has kept me away. Will be missed.

Who know's he might have left it to be available for astronomy. Overall it is a great loss. One of the few people who met the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong.

A great xylophone player and astronomer. He was always interesting to watch. RIP

Yes such a sad loss - always take the time to watch Sky at Night. Very good musician too.
Be interesting to see if SaN continues now Patrick has gone - Chris Lintott would be my choice as the new "front man" if they keep the show going.
Perhaps Patrick is finally with his love - Lorna - for whom he was cruelly not to marry.

Yes I think that is the plan. Though the BBC was lucky that Patrick preferred to stay rather than go to another channel.

He's more British than the Queen. He'd never leave the BBC! I'm glad I happened to catch his last show. Of course I'm saddened there will be no more, but what a great legacy to leave. Very few people in history could claim to have inspired so many.
