Sharp's first 4K 32-inch IGZO LCD is destined for Japanese workstations

We've been waiting to enjoy the promised extra detail and low power consumption of IGZO-based LCD panels for a few years now, and they're finally starting to appear. The latest on the docket is Sharp's new PN-K321 monitor, built for professional use with 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) plus HDMI and DisplayPort inputs, and what Sharp claims is the industry's thinnest frame at just 35mm thick. With an expected price of 450,000 yen or so (about $5,500 US) when it debuts in February 2013 it's still too pricey for our desks but if you're doing CAD work you may be able to design a budget it can fit into. We're seeing them in phones, tablets and now monitors overseas, here's hoping we'll see plenty of these high pixel density yet power-sipping panels with US release dates at CES in January.

Yes please, you buying?
At first I thought the 4K referred to the price - then again, it probably does. :o

This would be around the same time then? ;) Though since this will be equivalent to a retina screen why would you need a 8k version?

As this will effectively be equivalent to a retina screen and apparently Apple are trying to source similar screens for the next generation of Apple Cinema screens and or iMacs already so this might be in the next iMac that I buy. 8-)

You could just get one of these if you're feeling a bit flush.

I heard that Sony are renting new movies at £500 or $500 a pop for 4k media players http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/11/sony-4k-video-player-server/

These might be the most pointless things I've seen, well, for about 99.99% of the population. Talk about niche.

I remember when the DVD was a niche market.

If you'd asked me 20 years ago whether I'd ever own a 40" wide screen TV, I would have laughed. Now I have one, and it cost no more than the 21" CRT my parents had back then.

Thing is though, you arguably need a massive room to comfortably view a screen like that. That's where most people just don't have the need of 4K... that's cinema resolution - and I don't mean that spare room that your audiophile buddy refers to as his 'home cinema', I mean the 40ft screen at your local fleapit.
