Actually, as the dmg will result in a mounted volume, it will be looking for

Yep, that was kinda what I was trying to say, but it was late and my brain was fading. ;)

I'm assuming the actual encrypted disk image volume isn't called "LaCie 1TB" - if it's an 800Gb disk image, you probably wouldn't name it "LaCie 1Tb", if you see what I mean! If that's the case, it looks like the software's trying to backup to the wrong place?

Slightly surprised you haven't already thought of this. :-)
Well, I've been quite happy with the way I've been managing my backups, so never really thought about encrypting the data.
It's just an extra level of security, they may get my physical drive, but I should try and protect what's on it all the same.
For the same reason I've been thinking about applying File Vault to my Mac.

Correct.
I have other data on the drive but wanted to encrypt the backup, thinking about it now, it really does make more sense to encrypt the whole disk.

My first guess - it's because the volume name has a space in it. That's not being escaped on the command line.

That sounds like the most likely case to me, too.

The disk name was in quotes, so it should not need escaping. From experience, you only need to escape spaces etc. if the name is not quoted.

My thought was that the disk name was in quotes because it was telling the user about the disk, it may not have been in quotes internally. It's interesting that when the name changed the error message was a different one.
I would have thought it would make sense to ask for `perl`, rather than `perl[version]`.
All that being a moot point now, I think.

Steve, corrected by Paul, makes a very good point, that the error message shows it is trying to backup to the external hard drive, not to the disk image you created.

Gonna make sure the data is all backed up on the drive then try encrypting the drive and see if my software lets me backup to the encrypted disk.

You will be lucky. Depending on how big the drive is. It took 18 hours to transfer the contents on to a 6 Tb drive, and that did not involved encrypting any data.

This is only a 1TB drive, and it's done. (8+)
Now to see if I can actually backup to it.

It didn't work, so in frustration I zapped the application an reinstalled from fresh and right now there's a full system clone taking place on my Mac (posting this from my iPad).
