Just put it one
1 hr in the morning - mainly to warm the towel rail in the bathroom
1 hr in the evening just as SWMBO gets home

Personally I would leave it a bit longer but SWMBO gets cold

Indeed. The previous owner of our house had an economy 7 meter, even though it's gas central heading and a combi boiler with no hot water tank.
We soon had that changed!

I tend to like my house cooler than many people

I did too back when I was polycythaemic. I could walk around in a T-shirt and shorts and not feel the cold until November. Now that's resolved, I'm absolutely freezing. I'm sure I woke up at night because it was so cold. Ended up getting my thermals on. I now have a mattress topper and two duvets.

When I first moved in, things were very tight and I was used to living in a very cold rented room so the stat was set to about 10C.

When I used to rent alone, I tried to keep the 'stat to around 12*C and only stuck the heating on to dry my laundry.

Not put mine on yet. We don't have gas, so I've got electric wall heaters which are expensive, more so considering all the heat goes to the ceiling which is about eight foot high.
About a week ago I got the blanket out for the bed, and last night I closed the kitchen door which helps a lot.

Have you tried putting them on a washing line? ;)

heating still off here. however we need to procure thick curtains for the windows.

True - we've had loft insulation and the cavity walls done, all the windows are double glazed (although it's getting on a bit and probably is nowhere near as efficient as it could be).
If it is thin walled with large windows, you're [LIFTED].

Yes, quite frequently. I tend to find that. even if it's not totally dry, if it's taken in before the dew starts to fall in the evening it still dries a lot faster than if I'd left it in the house to dry. Admittedly that falls apart a bit if it gets rained on but I try to dry stuff outside all year round. I especially like frozen solid towels (it's kind of freeze drying). :D

Live in an old terraced house. The downstairs 2 main rooms have been knocked together to create a single large open plan space. This seemed like a really good thing until the first winter I was here because it's a bugger to heat, any heat disappears upstairs rapidly as there's no way to close off the stairwell. Double glazing, except for the doors and it's very noticeable that the heat disappears out the doors as well as upstairs. Oh yes, and there is only a single radiator in the main room as well as the gas fire. I swear the radiator has a defect as it doesn't kick out much hear compared to the others in the rest of the house so I have to stick the gas fire on as well when it gets really cold.

Probably sludge in the system. A drain down and power flush is around £300.

We had that last year. We bled the radiators, drained them, switched some off to force water through, but still nothing.

Then I found that I could also bleed the pump, AND I found another bleed valve near the hot water tank which took about 5 minutes to empty of air. After that, all radiators were packing out heat.

Heating doesn't go on until November and goes off again at the end of Feb (or when the snow clears, whichever comes first) We're very rarely sitting around in the house so on the occasion that we're in the dining room we have a fire going if it's cold of an evening. Mostly though our clothes air dry on hangers or the laundry airer in the case of underwear, we don't have a drier so if it's too cold to hang out then it hangs in.

Our heating only really goes on for the water and the fact my dad isn't remotely normal

I'm like J_V, if you're cold you're not wearing the right clothes!

Don't get me started on permanently cold women... How about you wear something a bit more practical than fashionable, and apply the same thinking to body fat! Sorry

I should point out that I mostly wear t-shirts even in winter - don't even like having my arms covered, never have done. Might be a bit of a Belfast thing, that.

There's a thought, I'll ask another Celt; Bratty, how do you like your heating?

That reminds me of a kid I knew in my sixth form. He always wore t-shirts no matter what the weather.
