I probably could manage fairly easily - my phone is mainly for the benefit of other people, so they can contact me - but I really wouldn't like to.
It's nice to know that I have the capability to make a call from pretty much anywhere.
I always have a calculator/calender etc to hand when I need one.
I can play games on it when I'm stuck somewhere and bored.
When I'm not using it for anything, it sits unobtrusively in my pocket.

If I lost my phone, I'd be annoyed, but it certainly wouldn't be the end of the world.

I'm showing my age here, but I remember when none of us had mobile phones. :?

No you're not. I'm only 27 and I can remember before phones. I can also remember before the web. I can also remember before DVD, Five (Channel 4 at a push), and PCs.

I'd sometimes like to get rid of mine (both of them), but I'm not sure I could. Maybe one day.....

Aye, 21 here and remember a time before all of that, bar channel 4, I don't recall getting channel 4, but I don't recall it never being there...

I'm with you on everything except channel 4.

I'm with you both on everything except mobile phones and channel 4. I distinctly remember the launch of Channel 5, the entry of the WWW into our home (28.8k modem FTW!) and perhaps most vividly (because it was so amazing to see a PC "so quick"), the launch of the 1GHz CPU! I can also remember the launch of the original PlayStation (and wanting one).

However I remember mobile phones for as long as I remember - my parents had one larger than a brick in the car. I'm 22. :)

I probably couldn't live without mine

It's my main means of communication (no land line except for broadband if no cable) and it's the one number that is constantly with me (had it 2 years now) so I don't have to text everyone every 12 months telling them to update

I could live without mine, but it wouldn't be much fun - for one thing, it's handy when I get bored to the point of suicide in work

Luxury! Absolute luxury! We had either Prestel modems (1200 down, 75 up - that's BITS!) or 300 baud modems.

I remember the introduction of the Atari 2600 and the Apple II! BBC 2 used to shut down for most of the day (school programmes in the morning, nothing in the afternoon, until about 5 or 6 o'clock.

Shops used to close on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays and many used to close for lunch! (Pretty much sums up Germany today, actually).

I guess I could live without mine as the only people who ever contact me are my wife and my mum.

I do like the convenience of having a phone with me always and have used it to make calls that while not always vital, have nonetheless been important at times where other methods would have been tricky if not impossible to employ.

I could not work without my handy (ask Big_D ) but I do miss those quaint German customs.
