AOL customer service, or lack thereof:

My mate has just moved house and contacted his ISP (AOL) to have his service moved over to his new address.

They refused. They said he would have to cancel his contract and set up a new one - the new contract offered nothing like the same service he was receiving for the money. He has been with the for fifteen years - clearly they want him out of his existing contract by any means.

Thing is, he moved seven years ago, and the transition was painless; and almost seamless.

Now they are telling him if he decides to move to a new ISP, he will lose ALL stored emails and his entire contact list, and they will continue to charge him until they MAC code has been taken up by the new ISP (which AOL are not in any rush to provide, despite being legally obliged to do so).

What a shower of sh!t.

You don't need to use AOL ISP to have an AOL account. He can use the email/AIM only option for free. AOL app itself can be run over another ISP. I have been using my AOL account for email since the late 90s but stopped using them as an ISP about 8 years ago.

So he'll still have access to his stored mail?

Caz, you're a star. Thanks - he'll be thrilled. :D

Yes he just has to tell them he will no longer be using them as an ISP but wants to keep the account. He should be offered it free for life.

^just had an idea for a horror film: its called "The Kerning", and its about a town full of bad signmakers who go crazy from all the terribly spaced lettering.

Something from the hardware store or sulphuric if you have some. We also had a thing like a small metal scourer, dropped into the kettle, that attracted the scale before the kettle. When full you cleaned it by kneading between your fingers. Seemed to work.

I start by buying plastic ones, not ones made from dragon skin.

Seriously, vinegar or boil it with a descaling solution in it.

The water here isn't too bad, our kettle is now 3 years old and still doesn't have much in the way of scale. In Bavaria, I'd need to do it twice a year.

Of course, the real answer is you throw it away and buy a new one. That way capitalism continues unabated.

We use one of those metal net balls. So far we haven't had to fall back on a full-on descaler. Any supermarket sells these things in the cleaning/household aisle. Limescale remover or descaler is what you're looking for.

I've heard/read about the vinegar thing, didn't know if it was just some sort of urban myth. (8+)
I'll buy some and give it a go.
