does liptons iced tea actually hydrate? I drink lots of it late at night and I still wake up with lips being dry as tho im dehydrated WTF

The only tea that doesn't hydrate are the likes of green tea. You take on more liquid in normal tea that you lose, it's a myth that it makes you dehydrate.

Not heard that before. Can you explain why?

+1. As I understood it, you had to drink 6-8 cups of tea in one go to get enough caffeine to cause dehydration. Plus green tea is supposed to have less caffeine than black tea. Unless there's more to it than just caffeine.

No, I can't - I must have succumbed to a green tea myth.

I hasten to add that may be a myth I made up in my own head as well. :D

Green tea has roughly half the caffeine of 'ordinary' tea. Green tea is also a mild diuretic but given the tea itself is mostly water, that would have negligible effect on hydration overall. It's not good a hydrator as water but then nothing is (and no, those 'sports drinks' that claim to provide extra hydration really are no better than water in this regard).

The thing with "sports drinks" is hilarious. I recall the lecture from the nutrition doctor at med school.

Initially, sports drinks had lots of sugars and salts. This lead to water being drawn into the gut (like drinking seawater).
They then changed it to "isotonic" so it reflected blood chemistry but there wasn't much absorption because the concentration was the same.
Now they've gone to hypotonic so more can be absorbed.

In all honesty, there's nowt wrong with plain water.

In this case Bratty, I'd be tempted to consider other measures than just water. The chances of you "actually" being dehydrated are slim I would say. Are you in the (extremely foreign Scottish) sun a lot? Get some lip balm and maybe look at your diet. Are you getting enough vitamins etc (particularly E when it comes to skin)?

I've got some sachets of Dioralyte which definitely hydrate me better than plain water or any other drink I've made. They're designed for fluid loss due to diarrhoea, but with me sometimes I sweat so profusely I get into problems.
