My Great aunt fed chickens in one of those in the 60s. Everyday she'd fill it with grain and plant it in the ground and say : "Eat his [LIFTED] face off!"

She's been dead for a long time. And considering it was a leftover from when the Germans invaded northern France, she did not treasure it that much.

Do not dig in northern France. There's thousands of live unexploded shells. When I was a child we got fenced off our house several time because they'd found 50kg shells.

So it was a shell, not a cannon ball then.

Quote:
Shot was a solid projectile that included no explosive charge. For a smoothbore, the projectile was a round "cannonball".

Quote:
Shells included an explosive charge and were designed to burst into fragments in the midst of enemy infantry or artillery.

Is there anything to stop a round being both a cannon ball (i.e. a ball shaped round fired from an artillery piece) and a shell (i.e. a metal casing enclosing an explosive payload)? I think not.

I thought a cannon ball was just kinetic mass, and a shell was something similar, but with explosive filling. The terms have changed since original conception of course.
