I'm certainly feeling more educated after reading that article.

More educated as to what newspapers aren't worth reading.

This was originally going to go in the tales of win thread.

The rear casing on my trusty iPhone 3G finally cracked, near the docking slot, so I bought a replacement back for a few quid on fleabay and set to work.

For those of you who haven't done it, the back shell of the 3G is basically the main chassis - everything is screwed on to it - so you have to dismantle the entire phone. 90 minutes later, after frikkin around with a couple of dozen of the smallest screws in the universe, I eventually get it finished.

I switch it on, and it fires up - everything is working - ipod, phone, camera, the whole shebang. Brilliant!

So, why is it a failure, you ask?

I flipped it over to give it a pollish up, and I see it - iPhone 3G 16GB.

My phone is the 8GB model!

It's three years old, I doubt they'd be that generous. ;)

Related to the German helmet story. I was at the last Mac Paris Expo demonstrating some software. This was odd because my spoken French goes as far as "what is the time" and "I'd like this from the menu". So we were demonstrating in English (note - pretty much everyone at the show was demoing in English).

Anyway, two chaps turned up. One was deaf, the other was going to translate from English to French to French sign language. This is a feat that was worth the trip to witness. Anyway, we told him what languages the software we were demonstrating supported, and the rapid hand gestures communicated the answer to the deaf man.

One gesture caught our attention: right hand in a fist, index finger pointing straight up, on the top of the head. We had to ask what that meant. "German" was the answer. Yes - the French deaf hand sign for German references the helmets with the spike on the top!
