Weird. I can get to the log in page but nothing past that. Not even the 'I've lost my password' page. Frustrating. Just serving up time out messages.

Turns out I can't sign into anything at the moment - Facebook, hotmail, paypal, ebay. My irritation's rising. I think I might go out with the camera for a bit.

Sounds like a cookie problem if it's related to logging in to stuff...

It's weird. Tried on two machines now, neither of them will let me log in to anything - but my digital banking is fine.

That's usually an MTU problem if it's timing out. Anything changed with your internets recently? Check the router, most ISPs now have an MTU of 1500.

As far as I know, nothing's changed on the interwebs. I'm loathe to ring and check them, because the support makes me cross. I've spent literally hours on the phone to them before and got precisely nowhere. The routers default setting for the MTU is 1500. I can alter the G4's MTU as it's connected via Ethernet to the router, but as it's also set to 1500, I can't see the point. Pissed right off, I can tell you.

Try searching for your ISP to see if other people are having the problem in your area? If it's a core network issue, then other people will be complaining.

[LIFTED] router. I cannot, for the life of me, see where to change the MTU setting. Turns out, TalkTalk (who we appear to still be using) use an MTU of 1432. Everything here, doesn't. We're all 1500. So - dusted off the Netopia Cayman 3347 I've had sat gathering dust, and I'm itching to stick that on and see if we get a different result. Except I can't, as I seem to recall the password for our account with the ISP being different to the one I asked for. They reset it, during the last round of days of phone calls and diagnostics, and now I can't recall what they set it too. I'll have a rummage, we probably noted it down on something. Which might have been binned.

thats strange, im also on talktalk and my router works fine with a 1500 MTU. it does say in the firmware that this should be kept at 1432 but we've had no problems so far, certainly not to the same magnitude as your issue what make/model router are you using?

Well, that appears to have solved it. I had to enable remote management on the router, then using the remote management page I could set the MTU from there. Restarted everything, and that appears to have been the fix!
Woot!
Edit - Cheers JJ for the tip off!

That is odd. As soddit said, TT use 1500 and it's obviously been working so far. I pre-program routers for a reseller of them, and they're all set to 1500.
There was a huge MTU problem when TT merged with Tiscali because they both used different MTUs on their networks, so people could reach some websites some days but not others depending on which way the wind blew. It's probably a local issue related to that old equipment which is supposed to have been replaced now.
Anyway, you're up for now which is good news. You can always put it back when they sort it.
