Not in London it isn't. It's always been around an hour and I've been commuting 25 years now (where's my medal?). Guys next to and opposite me do 4 hours and someone else drives in from Cambridge every day.

Now that's a long commute.


*nods* We've got guys here who come in from all sorts of places. One comes from the far side of Cumbria and we've got one who travels from north Wales every day by train (to central Manchester).

It reminds me of a news story I read about the guy who they found had the longest commute in the whole US. He actually lived in Yellowstone national park and commuted to Utah, something like that. Did the best part of 100,000 miles a year. They asked why he didn't just move and he said he'd rather commute, because nowhere else he could live looked as beautiful as the place he lived now. I dunno if they asked him why he didn't just get a job that was closer .

We have a few that come uo from Brigton and one that comes in from Leicester

Currently have a 10min walk each way. I should have my pushie next week and then knock that down to a couple of minutes.

25 min drive inc dropping off the gf at her work and for me to get into work, about 15-20 to get home

With the terrible weather the other week all the roads were closed off so it took over 2 hours to get home

People do mental commutes to London. You do earn more, but sometimes it's not worth it. When I first moved back to Dorset I earned less than half my London salary, but I lived in a bigger, nicer flat and had more cash in my pocket at the end of the month.

Having said that, now I have a family, I'm thinking I could go back. All that extra money, now I don't go out, I could save it rather than spend it.

Where you are is a much nicer place to bring up your family though .....

Absolutely. I'd be living in town during the week though, wouldn't move them. Not going to do it though.

Don't got back Tom only forward. Definitely don't move the family. If I was raising a family I would not want to do it in London. Someone here recently moved his family to Bath and he was commuting down on a Monday morning and going back on Thurs night then working from home Friday. He found it really hard though and he's now found a local job so he's left the company. I am only really in London because I was born here and don't know anything else. I have always been envious of people that work close to home but as you say the money is better in London but then everything is more expensive. I'm lucky as I live on the outskirts about 2 minutes from the countryside. I couldn't live in town as well as work here. I like the contrast.

By my reckoning it takes me about 50 minutes door-to-door each way, including a bit of waiting for the train and/or the shuttle bus. A few minutes walk to the station, twenty five minutes of train and then a company shuttle bus/taxi to the office.

Sun used to do a company shuttle bus, in partnership with Nokia who had a site somewhere nearby.

Sky have one here. They queue up in a straight line like proper little soldiers

I was visiting Microsoft in Reading earlier this summer. They're on this big industrial estate with a few other big tech companies. There's a free shuttle bus that runs from Reading train station to the various 'campuses'. A free shuttle bus which has free wifi.

My mate does retouching of school photos for a national outfit based near St. Ives.

They pay a lot of there staff minimum wage and are hardly a massive company renowned for treating their staff well.

Even they have a free minibus to collect employees from several points up to 10 miles away on the way to work!
