Quickly, sell it cheaply with no thought for the future!

Dont worry the Unions will insist on a silly pay raise and act like it is the '70's again to force it back into the red.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Anyway I'm sure their pension deficit will do that soon too.

A lot of the staff who work for Royal Mail aren't unionised any more. They're employed from agencies on a casual basis. Part of the reason they're back in profit is this has allowed them to massively cut their wage bill. I suspect if the unionised staff did go on strike, quite a lot of depots would now be barely disrupted at all.

Of course, it also explains why your post now arrives late most days and theft from post has gone through the roof. But neither of those things show on the balance sheet...

Very true.

Early last year I began sending birthday cards in brown envelopes, with printed labels; after cards failed to get through on numerous occasions. None have failed since then.

Wow, that would suggest people are still sending cash / vouchers through the mail. How stupid!

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Don't know about that. Derby has always had a massive postal theft problem. It didn't take long to realise that when I first moved here over a decade ago.

I disagree with you there. Our postal system should be secure enough to allow people to stuff a tenner inside a birthday card. Several people still send money to my kids in that fashion.

That would be nice but, the postal system is secure enough, it's called a Postal Order. That is a system that has been secure for many decades, and now we have internet banking etc. Sending cash to a relative is frankly asking for trouble. I wish the situation was better, but it isn't and never will be.
