Clive James says he is now "a recluse" after several years of serious illness.

The Australian writer and broadcaster was diagnosed with leukaemia, kidney failure and lung disease in 2010.

"I've been really ill for two-and-a-half years," said the 72-year-old. "I'm getting near the end. I'm a man who is approaching his terminus."

Yet James's comments to BBC Radio 4's Meeting Myself Coming Back have since been played down by his spokeswoman, who said he was "in reasonable shape".

Very sad news - I saw him appear on TV about a month ago (think it was the news?) and he looked very ill then. Hugely talented guy, naturally funny and more importantly he seems like a genuinely nice person. The world will be a poorer place without him in it.

That's a great shame. I came across a series of 10-minute opinion pieces he did for Radio 4, the other day (still available from the beeb here) and I'd forgotten what a great writer and broadcaster he was.

:(

Having seen someone die from cancer close up it's horrible for anyone to go that way. Great man.

He's only 72?

I remember watching him when I was younger and he seemed "old" back then...

All the best to him.
