That’s kind of why Enterprise failed. Rather than setting stories further into the future, they had to work against constraints. They also had this big villain - the Xindi - who had never been heard of before, never mentioned, and it all just fell rather flat. The solution for any Trek series or film is to either set it in the future, and refer back to what is in canon - which is massive and any deviation will cause a fan revolt, or reboot - essentially starting with a clean slate, which is what JJ Abrams has done. Frankly, the best choice. Trek was starting to get very moribund and was warping up it’s own black hole.

IMO Star Trek series: Poor Start Trek films: Good (except 1 & 5) TNG: Good DS9: Okay (I didn't get into it, but liked the huge space battles.) VGR: Good ENT: God awful!
