Quote:
Clive Palmer, one of Australia's richest men, has commissioned a Chinese state-owned company to build a 21st Century version of the Titanic.

The mining billionaire told Australian media that construction will start at the end of next year.

It would be ready to set sail in 2016.

The plan, he added, is for the vessel to be as similar as possible to the original Titanic in design and specifications, but with modern technology.

The mind boggles.

There is a good reason ships aren't built in the typical Edwardian style today. Full height bulkheads is a given, but as soon as you put in a bulbous bow and flared bow then it ceases to be in the correct style, and you would be mad not to.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The Titanic is a different class of ship to the modern ships anyway. Titanic was definitely not a cruise ship. It was designed to get people across the Atlantic quickly in an era before flight.

Anyway, you have to admire his unfaltering logic when questioned by journalists about it:

Quote:
"Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it,'' Mr Palmer said in response to questions from reporters on whether the Titanic replica would sink.

Mind you, I don’t think anyone made the claim that the Titanic was unsinkable in the first place. I believe that was a conceit introduced in various movies telling the story after the incident.

There may be a little creative license involved in this venture. I imagine there would be little point recreating the 3rd class / steerage accommodation to compete with Ryan Air.

Ryanair are fine for up to three hours, anything longer would be complete torture.

I was being sarcastic. There's already a film called Titanic 2.

first titanic IIRC was made right before WW1, if titanic hadnt hit an iceberg it would of probably been sunk anyway by German submarines. in WW1 german submarines blew up quite a few neutral american cruise ships, if they saw titanic a big juice target could they resist it? and so easy to hit too

I felt sorry for that nurse who was on the Titanic and the Britannic when they sank.

That reminds me of the Japanese man who survived the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
