Google Drive is go. Invitation only at the moment it seems.

Looks very similar to DropBox and (now) SkyDrive but integrated with Google's other services like Docs.

However, hmmm..... Don't put anything up there that would even vaguely qualify as being your intellectual property.

Ah, you've seen that already.

Good good.

I wouldn't be happy putting pretty much anything personal or confidential on Google.

Actually don't think I'd put anything on the cloud unencrypted. At least make it hard for them. But then I'm a bit of a control freak.

They need to make derivative works etc. so that they can give you thumbnails in browsers.

I wouldn't mind if that was all they were asking for but...

Quote:
a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content

To me that translates as, "we can put your content anywhere we like to on the internet with or without changes to the content."

That seems to be a more legalese version of what DropBox are saying here:
https://www.dropbox.com/privacy#terms
Quote:
We may need your permission to do things you ask us to do with your stuff, for example, hosting your files, or sharing them at your direction. This includes product features visible to you, for example, image thumbnails or document previews. It also includes design choices we make to technically administer our Services, for example, how we redundantly backup data to keep it safe. You give us the permissions we need to do those things solely to provide the Services. This permission also extends to trusted third parties we work with to provide the Services, for example Amazon, which provides our storage space (again, only to provide the Services).

So sharing content with others, using the desktop client, using an iOS/Android client, etc. all require the content to be repackaged and distributed in some fashion - and you need to provide permission for them to do it.

The upside is that no one is forcing you to use any of these services.

Here's the thing.

When Dropbox say 'we need permission to search/index/catalogue your data' they're doing it to better serve the customer. When Google say 'we need permission to search/index/catalogue your data' they're doing it to better serve the customer.

In DropBox's case, the customer is you. In Google's case, it isn't.
