When I've refrigerated a banana it turned pitch black all over after 24 hours

I thought bananas ripen in the dark more quickly? Hence refrigerating it is not good, and as others have said, they ripen other fruit more quickly.

I thought it was the temperature that made bananas mushy, rather than ripening too quickly. Either way most ripe fruit will hasten the ripening of other fruit as it releases ether, hence the one bad apple analogy.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

In th'olden days, bananas were shipped from the docks by train. The train consisted of vans which were heated by steam from the engine at the head. This warmth helped the bananas ripen before they reach the markets in London. Just thought you'd like to know.

I didn't know that slates are traditionally hung from pegs on a roof, not actually nailed to the structure.

don't you mean peg tiles? Slates have always been nailed ime. edit unless you mean those thicker stone slates... welsh slate is too light weight and a strong wind would suck them off the roof. oops better to be thought a fool than to...

I thought they were nailed - and in some more modern cases I suspect they may be - but this was a 15th century building being reconstructed. They used fairly thick Welsh slate, with a hole through which a long peg was inserted which allowed the tile to hang from the <insert proper technical term for long bits of wood running the length of a roof>. The weight of the slates above them literally fixed them in place. I'm sure thinner slates are nailed, mind.

My childhood record store of choice is set to close next month. Rythmic Records, in Greenock, if you're curious. This means the only place to buy music in Greenock will be Tescos. A generation of children will grow up not knowing the joy of walking into the store, nosing through racks of CDs and vinyl with a vast range of styles and tastes, and hearing something that isn't on the radio and being moved to approach the counter and ask 'Excuse me, what's this you're playing? Because it is AMAZING.' I know I'm being nostalgic, but it makes me sad to think that the present generation aren't going to know that joy.
