I haven't had any downloads of Doodle Sub for quite a long time (in fact, apart from the initial 40 or so I didn't actually have any).
So, there other day (i.e. Saturday 10pm) I decided to make it free (will add advertising to it at some point but I just wanted to see what happens).
Check the downloads yesterday and I'd had 19 downloads on Saturday in the couple of hours left that day.
I just checked now and on Sunday I had 265 downloads!!!
WTFFF!!! That's just insane!
Will be sticking iAds on there asap!

265 people didn't want to part with 69p. Bet they will be the first to moan about adverts.
Are you going to have 2 versions?

Do both. An ad suppoerted free version and an ad free one for people who pay.

I think it was Chris Phin (editor of Tap! mag) that said that ad free doesn't make many people upgrade and that you need something else to tempt them. Personally, I hate ads and will pay for them not to be there!

Presumably people who have already paid won't like adverts adding. But they will expect and extra levels etc that may be included in future ad versions.

A free game you can throw away. 69p isn't very much, but I've tried over 100 free games - that would add up to a fair bit! Of those free games, there's 3 I still play.
Oh, and I don't mind the adds. If the add was too distracting, I'd just not play the game. I've never actually paid for any app. on my phone. I don't even have an account set up to do so (on 'droid so I'd need a Google Wallet or whatever it's called) and I imagine a lot of kids are the same.

I have board games which are free. They contain ads but TBH they're not very intrusive. But what features could you add to a game of chess or backgammon to make me want to pay for it? Doubt there's much other than ad-free.
The games I like to play these days are the click/adventure types - practically all of Big Fish Games Inc games. The first few sections/levels are free but you have to pay to unlock the full version. The best thing is that they're good enough to make me want to part cash.
With something like DoodleSub I'd only consider paying for if I knew the game was good, if everyone was talking about it, and it was in the top paid for section of the apps store. I didn't buy Doodle Jump but so many people kept going on about it that I had to try it. Think I played it for a week and got bored.
IMO make the ad-supported one as it is now and then make an ad-free version with different levels, appropriate holiday-themed designs etc. Give people a reason go back.

My 10 year old downloaded Doodle Sub this evening and likes it. I tried it as well, and I think it's really good. She didn't download it when it was a paid app simply because she wasn't downloading games at that time, simply using her iPod to listen to music and watch videos, but she asked me to say thank you for making a really cool game.

That is what I like about the Microsoft Marketplace. You can download any non-free app and try it out - usually reduced functionality, only the first couple of levels etc. And if you like it, you can pay for it. It saves cluttering up the marketplace with free "lite" versions and full versions.
