Looks like Coke and Pepsi have had to change an ingedient because of a new Californian regulation.

Quote:
The chemical has been linked to cancer in mice and rats, according to one study, but there is no evidence that it poses a health risk to humans, said the American Beverage Association, which represents the wider industry.

The US Food and Drug Administration claims a person would need to drink 1,000 cans of Coke or Pepsi to take in the same dose of the chemical that was given to the animals in the lab test.

pcernie had better cut down.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

1000 cans would be less than a year's worth for some people.

Doesn't Irn-Bru have some E numbers for the colouring? I'd love to see someone dare suggest they change the recipe for that. The Scots would (quite rightly) lynch them.

I've just seen a similar article on a different news site.

Quote:
The American Beverage Association (ABA) said the campaign against 4-MEI exaggerated the risks. In a statement, the ABA noted a person would need to drink more than 2900 cans of cola every day for 70 years to reach the lowest dose levels the mice received.

Of course the figures are being cherry picked from all of the data but it does look like this will be just in California for now. As the component is just for the colour I doubt there would be any noticeable change in taste after a substitution.

The impression I get is that almost everything is know to the state of California to cause cancer, something the rest of the USA let alone the world quite frequently disagrees with.

California is known to cause cancer. They have far too much ionising solar radiation for one thing.

Presumably it's also against the law to roast a turkey in California, since the skin contains the same compound in higher quantities...

Shouldn't someone contact California, to advise them that too much Coke or Pepsi can*:
Rot your teeth
Make you fat
Make you pee more
Contribute to diabetes and other "too much sugar" related illnesses.
etc.

* I said can, but I am not stating anything as fact... is that OK for the x404 lawyers, (before California decides to sue our butts, or worse still, push to get me extradited)
