I'll tell you why. It's much the same reason a builder might buy DeWalt tools over B&Q own brand.

Each Mac I buy lasts me about 5 years with the minimum amount of maintenance. That means I don't need to keep installing, reinstalling, fixing, tweaking and so on in order to keep it running. I just start it up of a morning, do a day's work, and then shut it down at night.

I know there's loads of people who will say that you get the same with a PC running Windows, and I don't disagree. However, since the Mac was the best tool for the job when I started out, I've got a lot of money invested in software that would need to be bought again (thanks, Adobe) to work with a different platform.

I like the Mac. I like the OS. It doesn't get in my way, doesn't keep asking for my permission or trying to gain my attention like an over-eager puppy, it lets me get on with my job. To my mind it's as real a PC as those watercooled overclocked neon-lit contraptions some of you guys like to create.

So, you don't like Macs. Get over it. It's good to have a choice about the hardware and software you can run, don't you think?

True, it mucked him up partly because he decided to use some weird IDE which was only available on OS X, and had written most of his stuff in Pages, so when he moved to Windows he had to learn a different IDE (which seemed to take him forever) and he couldn't read any of his notes and had lost half of a piece of coursework...And of course he needed to start using OpenOffice instead of Pages which took him ages...

Numpty yes. Though I guess anyone who invests in proprietary formats could be classed as a numpty if they needed to jump ship for whatever reason...

True, I don't really see much difference between Vista and OS X in daily use. I tend to use the Vista machine more out of convinience.

They are only a numpty if they dont check beforehand if stuff is in a proprietary format before changing and not producing a change plan to enure smooth transition.

Remember its what you do with the equipment that counts.
My wifes best friend uses a iMac (which I recommended for her ) because with her job (textile lecturer) it was the best option for her and the software she wanted to use.
I use a PC with XP/W7/Ubuntu on it as it helps satify my requirement to faff, tweak and get shot at a lot by Germans and Swedes <swines>.
My wife uses an EEEPC as all she requires is light word processing, light surfing and email.

And, as ever, Dave has put his finger on the main point. Who cares what computer anyone uses? As others have said before, many Mac users also use Windows, either in their work or because they're interested enough, and make an educated choice of their preferred platform. Many PC users never use a Mac for any length of time, so their opinions appear to be formed by misinformation and puerile prejudices.

Do Nokia owners make fun of Sony Ericsson users over their choice of mobile phone? (Let's not mention iPhones, obviously, since they're from that nasty fruit company in Cupertino and therefore already tarnished with the brush of fashion victimhood.) Why does it matter who makes your PC, or what OS it runs?

From my point of view, calling people names and making fun of their platform preferences is childish and utterly pointless. My choices and preferences are not going to be swayed by anyone calling me "n00b" or "ghey", or trying to make out that using a Windows PC somehow confers some kind of nerdish superiority on the user (or even the other way round!). In fact it really goes to throw their petty prejudices into stark relief.

I like x404, and like the OP I'm pleasantly pleased we're all being nice to each other from the off. It is fun to spread troll bait about occasionally, but let's keep the level it is right now.

Ok, so... to sum up:

Windows is great. If you like Windows.
OS/X is great. If you like OS/X.
Linux/Solaris/*NIX are all great. If you like Linux/Solaris/*NIX.
<Insert Operating System of choice> is great. If you like <Insert Operating System of choice>.

I dislike these wars when they get down to mud slinging, though I think this thread has been in jest and all but serious. The last flame war over in the other place turned out quite well, talking about how different concepts could be used to simplify user experience, and it may have sparked some sort of interest to me as a possible dissertation project.

Though I feel in the last year or two the two sides were coming in at different angles...Mac users tend to talk about software and it's quality, whereas PC users tend to talk more about hardware and it's quality. When Mac was PPC software was talked about a lot more, which I found more interesting.

It's not all bad, I quite like them as long as it doesn't turn into a mud slinging contest, and if people don't like it, don't get involved.
