Remember all the kerfuffle about these things? That they basically took a photo of you without your clothes on while looking at you with your clothes on? Well, they've been banned from use at all airports within the EU's jurisdiction.

Quote:
In order not to risk jeopardising citizens' health and safety, only security scanners which do not use X-ray technology are added to the list of authorised methods for passenger screening at EU airports.

As I recall they were quite expensive and in use by at least Manchester airport and one of the London airports. More money spent on something useless as an act of security theatre, that everyone that flies will end up paying for in their tickets...

Once again, thank Christ for the EU. The UK government is far too trigger-happy with "anti-terror" measures.

I flew from Manchester in September with Nicola and Emily. I figured it was because we had a small child but they didn't make us go through the scanner.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

According to the front page of the Metro (yes, I know) Manchester Airport as 16 scanners at £80K each. They'll be allowed to continue using them for a year but they must be removed after that. If they aren't removed, the UK government (note, not the Airport authority) will be subject to prosecution.

We’ll see how they handle this one. Will they try to appeal this, based on rather too cozy US relations?

Will they have to appeal it? I was under the impression that the scanners used here don't emit x-rays.

I had to go through one in Holland when changing flights. They make you look like Mr Blobby. And no, I don't look like Mr Blobby out of the scanner. :D
